  I was terrorized as a child in a conservative Christian denomination. Today, five decades later, I still struggle every day with the horror it inflicted on me. I know I can never recover from it. It has broken me, mind and body. But your warm, reasonable and soothing manner brings me comfort.

  The way so many people have been trained to regard the self (and thus others) as a wretch, and view the delights of this life with suspicion or contempt, is basically spitting on the work of the very Creator we claim to love and appreciate. How can such a posture cultivate gratitude? Gratitude for what?

  I remember my best childhood friend sobbing hysterically. We were maybe 10. She&apos;d been to her beloved uncle&apos;s funeral and was told there that her uncle was burning in hell for all eternity. His sin? He ate meat on Fridays. <br>I didn&apos;t know it yet, but that day the judgmental cruelty of organized religion (this one Catholic) crashed into a heart &nbsp;that could not accept such a betrayal. God loves us like a dad? A loving dad doesn&apos;t subject his children to eternal torture. Eventually, I realized the church had deliberately &nbsp;chosen a path of unspeakable terror as a teaching tool. Sounds like human beings to me. Not God at all.

  So much gold here. In addition to the use of fear about hell, I’ve seen Christians reticent to let go of hell because they’re afraid they won’t love Jesus as much anymore if he didn’t save them from something so terrible. It’s a sad emotional trap.

  If god is love, he cannot ban souls in hell forever. Because love per definition seeks connection. Therefore to ban people into hell forever would be contradicting his own nature.
