I always had the thought Orcas don't eat humans because when a pod might have long ago, it suffered grim consequences and its survivors told those tales for millenia

Here's a personal fun fact. My mothers cousin, Tom Mead, wrote a book called The Killers of Eden. It documents the two-generation long colaboration between a pod of orcas and a family of humans hunting humpback whales, with hand-thrown harpoons, in wooden boats that they rowed out to sea from Twofold Bay, Eden, in southern NSW Australia. The book details many occasions where the orcas, led by a male called Old Tom, actively protected their human hunting companions, by keeping them above water when a harpoon thrower was pulled overboard when the rope fastened to a harpoon driven into a humpback whale became tangled around his ankle.
The pod would wake the family of whalers by slapping fins & tails on the surface of the bay, then when the men had prepared the boat, they would throw a rope into the water from the bow, and an orca, most often Old Tom, would tow the boat and the men to where the whale was, saving them having to row to the hunting ground. After a whale was killed, it was left overnight, bouyed & floating on the surface so the orcas could feast on the tail fins & tongue as their share of the team effort. The next day, they would return to tow the men out to retrieve the fin-less carcass for the oil boiled from the blubber.
Its a fascinating read for anyone interested in these intelligent humanophile creatures. The skeleton of Old Tom is on display in the Eden museum, where grooves worn into his teeth, from towing the whalers' boat out to sea over his lifetime of service to 2 generations of the whaling family, the Robinsons.
Happy reading!

"it's unethical to eat humans, because they are almost as intelligent as we are."

The main reasons Orca’s don’t eat humans, is they don’t eat junk food !
