  I live in Alaska. My kitchen is the farthest room from the heat source. My kitchen is always the coolest, in winter a little over 15 C. I hang my bananas, onions, garlic, potatoes are all in hanging baskets with the potatoes in a paper bag. I live alone and have to travel a long way to the store. My food lasts a long time because I know many of these tricks. I&apos;m 83 years old.

  Yes, when I was in high school in the late 50s, we were taught “Domestic Science” full of tricks like this, basic cooking cleaning and preserving tricks.

  Remember, this is how it was done in the 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, and early 60’s. &nbsp;Our ancestors were able to keep food fresh and didn’t buy more than could be consumed in a week or so. &nbsp;Folks with gardens didn’t have to worry too much and when fall came, out came the canning equipment. &nbsp;Larders were invaluable. &nbsp;Lucky are those who have similar storage options our ancestors did. &nbsp;<br>I do most of these and have been reminded of a few, but also learned a few things (vinegar cloth for cheese). &nbsp;Thanks for this video! &nbsp;I never knew my English mum or grandparents so I love watching these.

  Now we know why in US they stopped teaching Home Economics...wanted us to be dumb consumers, unable to appreciate or care for our homes so that they could put us all on the treadmill of endless work with zero reward, spending money we don&apos;t have for repairs and work we can do ourselves and food that is rotten to taste, way over priced and treated with Chemicals....they set us up for destruction. Trying to catch up now and learn useful things that matters. Thank you.

  It&apos;s a shame that most of our produce comes wrapped in plastic. &nbsp;Young people today think that it&apos;s cleaner, but we know better.

  Another thing that works is cutting lettuce leaves into salad-sized pieces, soaking the pieces in a large bowl of cold water with a half cup of vinegar added for 15 minutes, then spinning out the water, dabbing with a paper towel, and storing in the refrigerator in a ziplock bag with a dry paper towel in the bottom. Lettuce stays crisp and ready to use for 1-2 weeks.

  We didn&apos;t have tinfoil in the 50s/60s in our house. We had an allotment and my grandad picked daily. We ate by season, so it was fun when new veg or fruit came into season.

  This is why i get upset when younger people blame the older generation for the state of the planet. &nbsp;Our grandparents knew how to preserve and not waste. Plastic wrap wasn&apos;t even heard of. &nbsp;They were frugal wasting nothing. &nbsp;They used natural fertilizers not chemicals and dealt with two world wars of rationing and the great depression. &nbsp;We should all go back to the old ways, we might have to the way the world is going right now.

  My mum use to work in a mushroom farm in Somerset. I use to enjoy visiting. This was long time back now. We always had compost. I still clean my sink with white vinegar bicarbonate lemon or limes. I use limes to make my fridge smell nice.

  That&apos;s why I grieve the loss of our pantries and larders. &nbsp;I always wanted one but have never had one. &nbsp;My grandad taught me how to string onions but I also know the stocking trick.
