  I still smile when I open our cupboards and see the big tubes of , bloody expensive ,  Himalayan Pink Salt I bought up on sale.  Millions of years in the making and yet within 2 months M&S labels warn me it will be no good  😏...

  What annoys me about the dates on tins is that sometimes they are stamped over a ridged section and are unreadable.

  Something perhaps worth mentioning - If you're caught without a tin opener, simply rub the rim of the tin on a rough stone or concrete kerb or slab, and nearing the end, gently squeeze it. That'll do it. However, don't forget the tin opener in the first place as it's much more convenient. These survival knacks should be taught in our schools.

  I am regularly eating from tins marked Best Before 2014/2015/2016 (that's over TEN YEARS OLD) with no ill effects. This includes tinned vegetables, pulses, fish, meat, pasta and soups. The only foods that I've found degrade significantly are tinned tomatoes.

  Fray Bentos tinned pies. They'll outlive a nuclear winter. Half-life longer than Plutonium.

  in 1996, clearing out a deceased relative's house we found a tin of beans from the 1950's at the back of a cupboard. It had swollen up so badly it had become almost spherical in shape. The beans must have fermented. It was scary, removing it to the dustbin very gingerly in case it exploded !!

  When I was about 14 in 1965 my dad saw an ad for tins of corned beef going cheap. We bought 2 boxes ( 48 tins)<br>They had been produced for the army in 1914! 😂😂<br>Only one tin was blown and inedible. The others were fine.

  Butter beans... completely underrated. The backbone of any winter soup (with veg, chicken or bacon) healthy, filling &amp; cheap.

  The fact is that previously, tins were called “tins” because the can was coated on the inside with the metal called tin! This was what kept the contents of the can edible! Today, however, the metal called tin costs a fortune and manufacturer now uses a “plastic” coating inside the can . Unfortunately, my wife and I are seeing far more can “failures”, finding a number of tins &nbsp;blown well before time as a result of these new coatings being used!
