  We in Australia, especially in current and former naval circles (as l am) are very keenly aware of the significance of the Coral Sea action.  The Japanese were stopped in their tracks there, as they were stopped in New Guinea and driven back by Australian ground troops.  These battles really revealed the limits of Japanese military power and capability.  Be assured, these actions are studied to this very day by us.

  I can't imagine President Roosevelt (former Sec. of the Navy) ever considering "peace" terms. Not after the attack on Pearl Harbor or the experience of the British in defending their Homeland Island.

  Historian Richard Franks in his majestic book "Downfall" takes apart the Soviet intervention myth causing Japan to surrender.  He proves that it was the two bombs that caused that to happen.

  I think the greatest "What If" of Coral Sea & Midway is no Coral Sea battle at all (and no Saratoga torpedoing). Thus we get a Battle of Midway with all 6 Japanese fleet carriers against full-strength Enterprise, Hornet, Yorktown, Lexington, and Saratoga.
