Parshall and Adm Perry are two of the best historians on this medium. And both seem like all around great people too.

Dr. Parry mentions something about Mao being interested in "proto-communist elements" in Burma. There was in fact a Burmese Communist Party, led by a man named Thakin Soe, and it was leading the anti-Japanese resistance in Burma as part of a group called the Anti-Fascist People's Freedom League. The Japanese had also formed a collaborator army led by Aung San, which would later defect and join the AFPFL. The AFPFL negotiated Burmese independence, immediately after which Aung San was assassinated and the Burmese Communist Party were banned and went into hiding to organize an insurgency.

German raiders also prowled in the Indian Ocean. I'm surprised the Maldives weren't scouted out by the IJN. One of the first US pilots to photograph the top of Mt. Everest did so at 44,000 ft. in a Seversky P-43 Lancer during the USAAF mapping of an air route over "The Hump". Getting the Lido/Burma road usable for large Allied truck convoys was an incredible achievement considering the terrain and opposition. Jon Parshall is a wonderful educator on this topic with his concise summaries. Thanks, Time Radio !

I'm always partial to a bit of Parshall. The man knows his stuff, and knows how to put it over eloquently.

General William Slim, in his book ‘Defeat Into Victory: Battling Japan in Burma and India, 1942-1945’, had high praise for Chinese Nationalist General Sun Li-jen (also romanized as Sun Liren). General Sun, a VMI graduate, skillfully commanded small Chinese units in early efforts to stall the Japanese. Slim praised Sun’s handling of small Chinese units, Sun’s later training of larger Chinese formations in India and Burma, and his reliably effective command of those well equipped Chinese formations in Burma.

Great episode. Thought they’d already covered the best topics for counter- factuals from WW2, but this is one of the best shows of the series.

Greetings from Imphal. I really appreciate you talking about this battle—it is lesser known; however, it was one of the greatest battles fought by the British Army.
