  I think the best argument against the F35 came earlier this year when Trump said he was again opened to sell F35 to Turkey and the official white house response to international worry about this deal was to say "Don't worry, our export F35 are so thoroughly locked down, that Turkey would never be able be able to do anything without our approval and they would be locked into our supply chain for the next 30 years so we see this as a massive win-win" They went on to confirm that the only "unlocked" F35 were the american and Israeli ones.

  He is right, the F-35 is not a proper plane for Canada. The Gripen E is operationally, politically and economically the right one. We need an annoucement now.

  I think a Gripen in the air is a better fighter than any F-35 sitting in the hanger waiting for parts or mission approval from the US.

  The Gripen E avionics suites can be trained on flight data...  which means that if Canadian Gripens and Canadian F35's fly exercises together, the Gripens can be 'taught' to more precisely identify the F35 stealth network and reduced radar silhouettes.  This means we could have a fleet of Gripen fighters performing patrols of Canadian airspace that have a real chance of identifying enemy stealth fighters (whether Russian, Chinese, or whatever) that are threatening Canadian airspace.  The F35's can also be in precision deployments, rather than have them do the patrol duties of the Gripens.  The F35s are fine fighters, but have a very large operational cost, while the Gripens, also very fine fighters, if not quite at the F35 level, can perform patrol duties, as their operational costs are lower by an order of magnitude.

  When the Commander of NORAD openly states that 5th-gen stealth isn't necessary for defending North American borders and that 4th-gen jets do the job fine, you have to wonder why  spending trillions pushing F-35s into every single domestic role.   I work nearly a decade on the CF-18 as tech, the F-35 was a huge mistake day one. Maintenance have a big impact how a Country manage a fleet.

  Stephen Fuhr&apos;s eventual decisions may have a profoundly negative impact on the retirement strategies of certain unnamed individuals, some of whom may have very different public opinions of F35. <br>He is, at least, a straight shooter (no pun intended).<br>A Gripen can be the general practitioner and F35 a specialist on call for extra services.<br>You Defence Review gents are on top of the news!
