I recorded this episode with the help of my two daughters who joined me there on a school break. We had the time of our lives! Thank you Sweden 🇸🇪 and the Vasa museum for such amazing hospitality! I’ll be back soon :_History:

In 1832, the Swedish parliament decided that 125 hectares of oak trees would be planted every year for 200 years. 300,000 oak trees were planted at Visingsborg Royal Estate on Visingsö in Lake Vättern.

In 1975, the first oak trees were ready to be felled. At that time, the director general of the Swedish National Property Administration sent a letter to the head of the navy, pointing out that the oak trees were ready now, so all that was left was to build those ships.

The Vasa looks like a work of art more than a seagoing vessel.

I visited Stockholm and saw this 2023. You can't believe how incredibly large this thing is until you see it close up and in person. It is simply unreal.

I visited the Vasa museum last summer. It's well worth a visit. There's no other ship even remotely like her anywhere in the World. The ticket price is a little on the high side but they're not overly expensive and the money goes to finance the ongoing restoration and upkeep. The money goes to a good cause so and never mind a few bucks. It's a one in a lifetime experience to see her in her full glory, instead of seeing her on a computer screen.

The historian was fantastic in telling the story of the ship. Hats off to him and his vast knowledge of his country’s maritime history.

Want to point out that Vasa had a sistership called "Äpplet" (the Apple) that was made at the same time and launched one year later and had similar dimensions. However, when Vasa sank they had time to make the Apple somewhat wider and thus more stable. It was used for almost 30 years, saw battle and ferried troops to Germany during the 30 year war, and was deemed unfit for service and was sunk over at Vaxholmen, 17 kilometers (about 10 miles) from where Vasa sank.

So had they chosen to dare contradict the king and waited a bit with launching Vasa and modified it to be safer, it would likely have been succesful but also lost to us.

I am Venezuelan, 66 years old. My family visited Stockholm in the 60s. I still remember seeing the ship in the middle of a chemical cloud through small portholes in the Wasavarvet building. I still have the small naval gun my father bought as a souvenir.

I am an 84 year old Australian who is living permanently in Sweden. My first visit to Vasa was in the 1970's when it was still in its temparary shed and they were still spraying the ship with water, since then I have visited it many times, also with my family from Australia, they have all been most impressed with the display. Thank you for an excellent presentation of the history of the Vasa.

My absolute number one reason to visit Sweden is to see the Vasa.

I’m a proud Swede and seen 100 ducumentaries on this ship. I live just a stonethrow away from this museum. But i never seen a better video about this ship then this one. So much information in just 30 minutes. Be proud, you really made the best Wasa video ever.

That they could float her in on her own keel still amazes me to this day.
