I am proud to be one of those divers who helped with the initial survey work on the ship in 1973 - 74 with the BSAC in some of the most difficult diving conditions that I ever experienced. very limited (sometimes non-existent) vis, strong currents and very limited time to do any work during slack tides.

The Swedish Wasa from 1626, worth a visit.

Thank you! And I'm glad to have visited the museum. On a side note - The Vasa ship museum in Stockholm is on another level. A complete ship from 1628. A life changing experience seeing it. Once again, thank you!

I lost several ancestors who went down with the Mary Rose including George Carew and another captain ...Sir Roger Grenville.

Its crazy how some of this history just disappears despite how much accounts there are around at the time.

Sizable Crew. I was in the US Navy. My ship had 350 on board so I can just imagine and surely my modern ship afforded more living space. Remember many sailors seriously could not swim then.

Among die-hard archery enthusiasts and historians, the Mary Rose is a kind of Rosetta Stone. People who could not believe in the outrageous claims of long-bow experts, especially war-bows, were finally convinced. But the craziest research revolved around the fact that archers could be identified from their distorted skeletons. A person can only marvel at the physical and mental strength of those bastards.

Now, I have to go on-line to complain that Starbucks doesn't know the difference between a DUSTING of nutmeg and a SPRINKLE. And don't get me going about those chairs you have to wait in.

Plus, I think I may have snagged my cashmere T-shirt on my SUV.

I do wish that the remaining timbers of the ships bow castle could be recovered too. I was given to understand that parts are still in the Solent under protective sandbags! There has always been some debate as to what the ships bow actually looked like. There are the few crude distorted paintings but no actual plans of the ship exist which led to some artistic licence being given to the ship. Parts of the upper bow were missing and some remains hidden. Recovery of these parts may enable a more accurate illustration of how the ship really looked during those times.
I had some conversations with staff at the museum about this but nobody could give me any more accurate information.
