huge class element here as well! rich and thin women smoking is “chic” but a poor person in a trailer park smoking is “trashy”!

The irony of young people being (generally) obsessed with anti-aging happening alongside the re-emerging trend of smoking.

this ciggy renaissance has the vibe of almost being a reward? an indulgence, not a vice - bc you've worked so hard! you've worked so hard to be thin, pretty, white, wealthy, and yes they say these might be bad for you, but you deserve a treat! they can't smoke bc they're still poor, fat, sick, etc, but YOU can, you've earnt it!

whereas back in the day, there was almost a functional slant to the advertising - cigarettes relax you, give you energy, motivate you, they're great for your health, make you a better mom/wife/husband/worker. it's a new brand of commodity fetishism (and we all know how much the fashion industry thrives on that!)

Vaping is inherently cringe, so it could never generate the same aura. Sorry, it’s true. That being said, smoking on the runway or treating it like a cool girl accessory is even more cringe - I thought we all outgrew it by 15 and either quit smoking or started smoking for real.

The thing I think you’ve missed out is the rise of cigarette smoking and the parallels with using food as luxury and quiet luxury. In the uk at least a packet of 20 fags costs like nearly £20 these days, you are literally burning money.
Also you totally can’t smoke in bars and pubs and a lot of public spaces any more. But you can smoke in private members clubs (I think) and private houses and parties. It gives smoking an air of exclusivity. Rich people can afford to smoke and are allowed to smoke inside, poor people can’t. I reckon that has impact on why it’s getting popular.

When it comes to storytelling, too many people think smoking is a shortcut to someone having a personality. Lazy writers, directors and designers think that showing a woman smoking, be it on screen or on the runway, puts you in the fast lane to coolsville. It's tired and derivative and I think oddly gendered, where male creatives can't come up with better ways to show a woman hitting rock bottom or accepting that the world burns around her, beside putting something slim and long in her mouth.

In real life, smoking is a nuisance and a big red flag that someone doesn't care about the well being of themselves or others. I'm not taking time out of my night at the club just to shiver with you on the patio when I could be dancing.

As a pulmonary (lung) nurse I have to beg everyone NOT to start smoking. I have yet to meet ONE patient that is glad they started smoking.

I work in an office that’s 99% women and nearly everyone both smokes and is super concerned about their weight and takes weird weight loss supplements. So I definitely think there’s a link (correlation if not causation) between skinny being trendy and smoking. As someone whose asthma attacks are triggered by secondhand smoke, I hate how normalised smoking has become 🙃

Meanwhile Phillip Morris’ CEO is dancing in his gold plated office. Coming from a 80s childhood, it seems to me people have somehow forgotten just how thoroughly and unapologetically evil the tobacco industry is. As in, it literally kills people tor profit. I guess if fashion wants to get in bed with Satan then no one is going to be surprised.

This is so scary. I never thought smoking could come back into fashion after people experienced so many loved ones dead from the cancerous results.

My aunt has been smoking since she was 14 and is pretty much physically falling apart now 45 years later but she can't stop. Her biggest reason why she can't stop though is not the addicting nature of nicotine but because going for a smoke break actually gives her a moment of rest. It's an extra chance to step away from it all and just do nothing but stand and smoke her cig. It gives her a moment of peace. My bf talked about a time he almost started smoking literally just so he could get those extra breaks during a hard shift. I think for a lot of people it gives them a sense of peace and relief in the world which is pretty sad.
