filming yourself "not being online" is just as online as "being online". reacting to something is being influenced by it, often in a knee jerk way. there's nothing authentic about being online as someone "off the grid" or whose life "is a verb, not a noun". it's still all performance

This seems like a community collectively overthinking. More thinking won't solve this problem. The only way out is to log off

Leaving social media six years ago has definitely helped me in learning to just don't care. I buy second hand clothes only in person, I hang out with people I meet in real life, I work as a seamstress and live within my means. I've built such a strong sense of self that I don't know how to be anyone BUT myself. I am quiet, mind my business, wear my custom clothes and save my energy for more important things. I don't care how I look to others because I already attract people like me and that's all I need.

“Selling lost people the dream of identity” is such a great point. And I think that we as people are more lost than ever.

honestly, the whole desperateness to be ‘niche’ and ‘different’ makes me cringe so so hard. you already are different, you already are niche. everyone is unique. and maybe they will realise that, when they actually do get off tiktok and aren’t being told how to act anymore. being ‘niche’ isn’t something you can learn how to do from watching some tiktok tutorials. 😭

edit: all the likes give me hope that the world isnt full of sheep omg

You can never find out who you are if don't periodically stop or slowdown and calibrate and think. Jumping from trend to trend and wishing your life was like what you see online means difining yourself externally exclusively.

I think part of the problem is that people online are so desperate to be a cohesive “brand” without understanding human beings are multi-faceted, complex and constantly juxtapose themselves. Not every part of your life has to match or be “aesthetic”

Gee, you mean to tell me the jumping from identity to identity, buying various outfits like they are costumes and cycling through them inside two months doesn’t actually lead to a solid and lasting visual identity? Who could’ve possibly known that /s

I'm old, so I don't know how I ended up here 😊 but this feels more like an age thing, not a generational thing. My friends and I all went through this between 23 and 26-ish, but that was pre-social media. So, it's not new. Just regular aging experience.

Faux intellectualism is just as embarrassing, the only thing that will help is logging off.

These trends are all still missing the point. Your personnality isn't supposed to be this perfectly framed presentable picture, personalities are an ever shifting mess depending on your personal lived experience and your personal needs, and most importantly, it tends to be full of contradictions AND THAT'S FINE! As long as people will try to "frame" themselves they will remain unsatisfied and unhappy. You want to know who you really are? That's not something you can get by observing others, no matter what they show or don't show about their own lives. There's a reason why so many cultures have some form of spiritual retreat involving removing oneself from outside influences. You have to look at yourself, both inward and outward, consider your thoughts and behaviours at a distance, and be aware that what you see is not a definitive answer either, it's just the answer at that moment.
