this honestly feels more performative than earlier versions of "influencer culture". you still need to conform to the same beauty and style standards, but now you need to have a layer of nonchalance and "manic pixie dream girl" to it, like you just happened to trip and fall into an instagram post

"the perfect amount of messy" this is the contradiction at the crux of the matter. we are going from perfectly curated dumps of photos to a rather exaggerated version of the same.

as a visual artist too, rama’s socials is not “trying to be not an influencer” its typical personal posts that also showcases her work. its old school internet social media. idk where it came that ppl think theyre “influencers” the moment they post anything online

it/cool girl will ALWAYS thrive on exclusivity and unattainability. in my opinion, the most vulnerable and transparent creators i know don't get the same exposure and love. if it girls reveal too much of their reality, their struggles, their insecurities, their inspo sources, etc then everyone would be like them and at that point, would they even still be cool? i try not to fall into that trap of wanting to seem so unique on my channel lol. at the end of the day, we're all interconnected and we should use social media to embrace that.

anyway, incredible analysis per usual :)

They will sell community! Because that’s the new craving of “real life”. Substack’s popularity feels like a first step. I’m thinking the next step is selling subscriptions to in-person clubs - books, baking, crafts, etc. locally you can pitch that you might “see them there” or if it’s a national club, you can emulate the same lifestyle in your own city

They are not influencers - but they are. They live in the same reality with you - but they show u a fur coat. They are not about consumption - they will show u new vintage jaket. Its like zero logic

The quote about not being seen, being the new cool struck me as kind of just how ‘normal’ ppl exist. They already aren’t being watched by default, don’t have aesthetic coherence, aren’t curating access, aren’t strategically “withholding.”
So this influencer version feels like a simulation of the ordinary, filtered through privilege, taste, cultural capital, and the quiet assurance of being legible to the right people. It’s the difference between not being invited to the party vs being invited and choosing not to go, and making sure people know you declined. Since coolness structurally always needs distinction, rarity, asymmetry of access, I feel like the ‘logic’ of this type of internet figure (and its issues) will always persist and reproduce themselves. Only the costume changes.

‘Cool girl’ will stop posting outfits. They will post online, and you will see their outfits, but the posts will not centre around clothing. Reducing who you are to how you dress will become passé.

I think there’s a major difference between someone who is an influencer and someone who is actually influential.
