  So, he was 86 years old, near the end of his life, and got a 4 year old killed, who had barely begun her life, with his carelessness.

  Un-freaking-believable. I retired from flying at 64 with a clean record and 12,350 + hours before my skills diminished. This was ridiculous.

  It&apos;s sad that some people can&apos;t be honest with themselves. My father from the age of 80 until he died at the age of 87 always asked me if he should still be driving. He told me to take the car keys off of him if I thought he lost the ability to drive. He was worried about hurting somebody else and not about himself. This man knew he should not have been flying.   That’s great that the medical examiner was decertified but I can’t help but think they should be criminally charged as well.

  I remember when my Dad started to decline as he got older. Eventually during a physical therapy stint, I asked his therapist how to broach the topic of Dad not driving after a minor stroke that affected his right leg. I&apos;ll never forget what the therapist told me. He said to ask Dad if he felt he could stop a car in time if his grandson was in front of the car. When my dad wanted to drive again, I asked him that and he said truthfully no and gave up the keys to his truck. After that I became his driver to all his appointments to help Mom out until he finally passed.

  My Grandfather had macular degeneration.<br>He voluntarily gave up his license well before he was advised to stop driving, because he understood the risk and responsibility of such a serious condition. <br>It was very hard for him to give up his independence, but he put everyone else&apos;s safety ahead of himself.<br>The world needs more men like him.<br>Rest in peace Pop.

  My dad is 86, been flying all his adult life. He is still healthy and sharp, but decided to stop taking passengers several years ago. Now he&apos;s decided he shouldn&apos;t fly solo anymore, so just goes whenever I can go along as his safety pilot. Sad that Gene had no ability to be honest with himself, but to take 5 other innocent people with him is unforgivable.
