Weclome to Part Two of what I consider my proudest achievement and my favourite series I've ever made, yes I include USS Enterprise in that. The history of the 83rd Infantry Division has been an obsession of mine for years ever since I read Cornelius Ryan's book "The Last Battle" and heard the famous story of "The Rag Tag Circus". Where an American infantry division beat every other Allied unit to Berlin INCLUDING THE SOVIETS by stealing every single vehicle and weapon system not nailed down, they were the E-4 Mafia personified and writ large. The only reason they didn't take the German capital was because they were ordered to stop after crossing the last river in their way.

This is a Two Part series, however you don't need to have seen Part One to watch Part Two, though you are missing out on some fantastic stories if you do.

I would like to personally thank the 83rd Infantry Division Association and their official historian who manages the archive from which I sourced the documents to write, edit and produce this project, without their recommendations on books I'd have been stuck.

I'd also like to thank the family of Lt Col. Granville Attaway Sharpe for providing me with various photos and documents without which this video would not be possible.

And finally I would like to acknowledge the service and sacrifice of the Veterans themselves, many of whom gave all of their tomorrows for our today.

To find all the sources I used in the video you can visit their archives yourself:

https://83rdinfdivdocs.org/

For Specific Sources:

Shavetail: The Odyssey of an Infantry LT in WW2 - by William Devitt
Lee Millers War: Beyond D-Day - by David E Scherman
A Country Boy Gone Soldiering - by George Henry Waple
Breakout and Pursuit: The US Army in Europe WW2 - by Martin Blumeson

Sharpes Battalion - By Martha Sharpe - Memoirs of Lt.Col G.A Sharpe

https://83rdinfdivdocs.org/accounts/s...

The Rag Tag Circus: From Omaha Beach to the Elbe - By Col. My great uncle served with the 83rd.

He stole the whole air raid siren from Buchenwald. It's in Indiana now. I always wondered how he got away with it.

Now it makes sense.

An infantry division stealing and using a plane is just absolutely hilarious. It wasn't enough to simply paint it army green with a white star oh no no no. All the troops on the ground needed to see the 83rd logo and proof that the circus had their own flying monkey. Absolute mad lads all of them.

"Grand Theft Panzer," what a silly title, and yet a brilliant one at the same time...

I think it's best said by Tex while talking about the Warhammer. "But hey, abandoned weapons are usually free, usually dropped only once, and you cannot convince ANY army in history, that you shouldn't just take them home."
