Wow. "Reminders after misbehavior are just inconsistency." I need to write that in BOLD at the top of my planner!

Thank you this post. For 6 years as a new lateral entry teacher - I was doing all the strategies you said to STOP. As of today, I have applied your methods to a "t" with all 12 of my Middle School enrichment classes for the past 3 weeks with great results - nothing short of a HUGE transformation. My attitude and mindset towards my students and their attitude towards me (though very rough at first) makes my class a place we all want to be. We have a more positive, professional relationship. They do better at "locking in" and producing expected work. My students and I are moving forward with success - and that makes us all happy! I told my husband that if this is what teaching could be every day - maybe I can work until I am 65!! I love it!

Unfortunately my administration told me it’s a waste of instructional time to have them practice how to come in the classroom. They don’t see the importance of practicing procedures in middle school. However, I will do what I can with my door closed and I will definitely “slow down”. Thank you!!

This video assumes that my 5 teen boys per class will listen to one thing I have to say to begin with. They do exactly what they want, when they want.

I started watching these videos to refine my parenting style and they help! Especially being a referee! Huge change from that alone. Instead of directing her anger at me she accepts disappointment and responsibility and CHANGES! she is developing so much self esteem and trust in herslef. It is so rewarding to watch after years of feeling stuck in the same place! Changing the environment ia a great reset tool at home too. Calmly and slowly explain we're cleaning up, and then do a reset on expectations.

Thank you Michael! Only accept excellence. I agree ! It’s really up to me to ensure the rules are carried through and not give in but that is the hardest for me. I have to promise myself that I can do it.

I have watched a lot of your videos on Smart classroom management and I am really appealed by the the system you have put forward I really appreciate you sharing this.
I am just a little bit hesitant about the consequences that should be implemented when a boundary is not respected. ❤

Another follow up. I teach 5 academic classes. 1 class is out of control. Another is mostly out of control. I started mid year btw. Just when I think I’m starting to get a grip either a new high risk student enters or an old one returns. I have several special ed students in these mixes as well. On some days I cannot even teach until I have several of them removed. One day I put the assignment and instructions on the board and made it clear they were on their own. ( it’s algebra and pre algebra btw). They all started complaining they wanted instruction. Then I made it clear I would only teach if they were not talking, that I would not talk over them. The next class could care less if I taught or not. They don’t care about the points or the assignment or the quiz. I’m not going to interrupt their social hour w my math class. I have almost quit a couple times. But I refuse to let teenagers force me off my job.

Makes a lot of sense, everything you said — I’ll use it, thank you!

But one thing always remains unsaid in videos on this subject — what are some examples of the consequences? For instance, in my country it’s not allowed to send a student for time off.

This is a follow up to my previous comment. I taught for 20 years, retired and came back this year. I’ve never seen this type of behavior before. I have to laugh. They are never going to reflect on anything but their tic tok videos.
