  I find that most of my classroom management issues stem from one or two kids per class every year. Pick your battles, but become good at telling which kids these are and have a protocol for addressing them. Have a buddy teacher, document everything so you can make a case for admin to do something, call parents/guardians. Once that kid is addressed, it will feel like managing your room is a gentle stroll rather than a hike up Mt. Everest.

  THANK YOU for this video Michael! I have always known it is fear holding me back, but I am working on overcoming this. It is all about gaining confidence. A huge thing is getting over my need to people please, and a deep core fear of not being liked. I try to flip the script and tell myself that it is my duty to protect the learning environment. I need to be okay with holding up expectations even though the students may seem disappointed in that moment. I need to be able to tolerate people being uncomfortable. I need to remind myself that it is the students job to test the limits and they are actually looking for me to hold the boundaries. They are looking for a leader and they deserve to have a teacher who leads a calm, orderly class. How do I get over this deep core fear of not being liked?

  You don’t need the best plan or best rules ever invented.<br><br>You need a sound and well articulated plan that you 100% stay committed to and fairly execute, and follow through on.<br><br>Students will adjust once you have made it clear that they cannot deviate without appropriate consequence.<br><br>*That’s why second semester is far smoother for some teachers, while other teachers deal with the same issues all year.

  I was just about to fast forward through the last one when you had lower expectations because I was certain I didn’t do it. But then I listened to your explanation. I realized I absolutely do it. If I have a sixth grade group that can’t work in groups then I tell them forget it. You guys are not gonna work with groups because you’re not able to do it and behave. I didn’t think about that as something that I lowered expectations about I just felt that I was removing a possibility of something they would enjoy doing. But when you put it the way you’re putting it I guess I can see that I needed to make them do it the way I wanted it as opposed to removing it.

  This is so true. &nbsp;I think one of my fears is not being liked... so I tend to avoid interactions with prickly students. &nbsp;Which is probably not the best response, but it is what it is. &nbsp;Also I am afraid my expectations or rules are unreasonable or unrealistic, so I second-guess myself and become inconsistent. &nbsp;Especially if students push back on things. &nbsp;And/or if other teachers don&apos;t do them. &nbsp;For example, I don&apos;t allow students to eat in my classroom (it is a science lab)... which I do enforce fairly consistently as it is a safety issue - but it also annoys me when people eat in a classroom context (I attended a PD where someone at my table was eating and I found it so distracting!). &nbsp;Still I worry that this is not reasonable, since other teachers at my school do not have this rule and even other science teachers allow eating in the classroom if it is not a lab day.

  This is helpful. I have had difficult classes where there are multiple students causing disruptions and not following the rules. It was hard for me to catch all the misbehaviors - it felt like what a mile where I’d be giving a consequence and then others were causing problems around me but I didn’t catch exactly who said it or did it. This is where I feel consistency is really difficult. How do you deal with classes where many if them are playing up?

  The way I overcome the stress, both in teaching and personal aspects, is by imagining the greater stress and chaos multiplying from not having clarity. There is a recent example in my class with one student who is always an active participant, but who probably thought this participation exempts from following our class rules. It took some time, quite stressful for both of us ( &apos;here we go again&apos; in my mind and probably &apos;look at me&apos; in the student mind), but now the tasks are not disrupted with extra questions by this particular student and the quality of work improved. It does take time and patience, but for me, it&apos;s worth it. Gabriela
