I would guess it's the initials of the 2 guys who restored the box: JR and JW. They imbedded their initials inside the word "TELEPHONE".

I've got a habit of making horrible typos on fairly inane words and a few times that's turned into long-running inside-jokes with friends. I can easily imagine someone mistyping telephone as tejrjwne in a group chat, the joke grows to the point where one of them dares another to go put it on their local phone box, and they actually do it. Maybe a few drinks involved too.

The font is one called Goldenbook, very similar to the old telephone lettering on the boxes but not quite identical. It's available with an Adobe Fonts subscription, which comes included with an Adobe Subscription used for photoshop etc, and interestingly it became available on that service in 2016. So perhaps a local graphic designer noticed a new font looked very similar to the old telephone box typeface and decided to play a little prank on a local telephone box? But why those letters in specific?! WE R JJ TEN?
