  No joke I remember asking my grandmother for one of these for Christmas back in the day...and she instead gave me a Game Boy Pocket with Link&apos;s Awakening. Whenever I see any videos talking about the Gamecom in the years since, I realize how much of a bullet I dodged.

  My favorite piece of Gamecom lore is that the Symphony of the Night port leaked a few years ago, nearly completed, and it was actually super impressive. It was by far the best playing and looking Gamecom game, and if released, would have been an actually competent handheld version of SotN.

I’m pretty sure I know what happened.<br><br>In a lot of low end hardware, there is only barely enough hardware to run an OS/store memory/etc. To save on that, sometimes applications become input limited, meaning they only refresh when an input to the system is detected, rather than 20/30/60 times a second. This is most commonly used in menus, and sneakily happens in some modern titles to help make unlimited clock speed GPUs not get a stupid high number of FPS on menus (which are some of the least graphically intensive parts of the game).<br><br>It looks like in the dual loading screen, and possibly some other times (such as after doing the opening animations), the console becomes frame limited. This, combined with either a poorly coded or damaged copy of Centipede, essentially executed an accidental ACE (arbitrary code execution), which caused the system to handle the turnover of the operations from the handheld firmware to the cartridge software incorrectly. <br><br>Instead of becoming clock dependent, the frames continued to be frame limited, while booting the Centipede program. The result: turn based Centipede, where the game is calculating like normal but only refreshes whenever a key is pressed.<br><br>Interestingly, this is almost the inverse of how the original Diablo was accidentally created. In that case, it was a turn based experience and a dev accidentally set the turn timer to 0, resulting in the enemies updating every frame- becoming a real time beat ‘em up rather than a strategic experience as they had planned.<br><br>I might have some things wrong since my experience with this stuff is usually limited to the DS/3DS systems but I can’t really think what else it might be, especially with the fact that Centipede was acting strange across consoles.

  Alright, story time: I convinced my parents to get me one of these for Christmas 1997 because I was a little nerd who was obsessed with PDAs and always wanted a pocket computer that played games but also had an organizer, calculator, and connected to the Internet so this seemed like the perfect device for me!<br><br>I’m sure I have footage of Christmas morning somewhere when I got the console bundled with Lights Out and Mortal Kombat Trilogy (which I distinctly remember my Mum saying was difficult to find and was one of her first-ever purchases on eBay).<br><br>Imagine my disappointment when I discovered that the games were awful, the organizer features didn’t work well, and you had to buy a separate cartridge to connect to the Internet.<br><br>Suffice it to say, I saved up my own money to buy a Game Boy Pocket that Spring and never looked back!
