We do not have TV licenses here, because of some tea dumped in a harbor long ago.
Instead, we have endless commercials for shit we'll never purchase.

A few years ago, I changed the name of my Wi-Fi router to “TV Detector van No 21”. About a week later, one of my neighbours told me that detector vans were operating in the area 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

The TV Licence should only be available to people who have passed a TV test to show that they are capable of operating their TV safely and watching the BBC in a suitably deferential manner.

I am 76 years old, I worked as a driver in the TV Detector vans.
I worked with the BBC from 1968-74
Because of the costs rigging out the "very unreliable equipment" we had 1 van in 10 with the equipment and the rest had phoney antennas fitted to the roof.
If you look at the vans there's a window, we had to sit there looking out with large headphones on our head, a lever inside the van moved the antennas making it look as though the van is scanning the house, we had a list of the houses without licenses we were to visit in any area, when we arrived at this address we were to park outside and move the antennas, whoever was at the window would be pointing and making gestures towards the front windows.
Even if the van was equipped with the magnetrons, it was difficult to say whether a radio TV, WASHING Machine or anything with a motor was being used.
All to scare the householder into buying a license

One day a lady was rushing out to collect her kid from school, she was a little late, just then a man from the TV licencing stopped her at her gate asking to see her TV licence.
She expalined she was in a hurry to pick up her child from school, but she said she did have a licence and if they called back in about 10-15 minutes her hubby will be home from work, the licence is behind the clock on the mantlepiece. So after about 15mins they called back and he hubby answered the door, they expalined who they were and asked to see the TV Licence. Her Hubby said, "Oh yes, we do have one, I'll have a look for it," the TV guy said, "Its behind the clock on the mantlepiece." Her hubby said, "Wow! Thats some equipement you have there in your van."

Oh ! TV 'Detector' vans existed ok ....
As a kid I remember sitting on a kerb reading my Beano comic and seeing a group of kids chucking old food and a can of paint at the van. A hell of a scene followed where one guy from the van ran after the kids and they of course bolted and left him way behind. I saw everyone had disappeared and went back to my comic, I was then lifted into the air quite brutally by one of my arms by this bastard out of the van and he shouted abuse at me demanding to know my name and address another friend of his came across from the van and joined in shouting in my face , I of course only being 5-6 years of age started to cry at this assault . A lady from the house behind me came out with a poker and threatened these bastards that if they didnt leave me alone she would do unspeakable things to them . They seemed shocked and let go of me . I ran behind her for safety . She told them I had nothing to do with the other kids and I was sat there all the time before and after the van got covered and hadn't moved an inch.
Edna demanded their names and they tried to ignore her and casually waked back to the van . She told me to go wait in her front porch and she stomped off to stop them. She stopped them getting into the van . Eventually the local silver haired policeman came and questioned her and the TV dicktector tossers . He came across to me and asked if I knew the kids involved....I didn't ... No apology or anything from them. Edna gave me a glass of milk and some cake to cheer me up and took me back to my mum round the corner . She was a lovely lady . I got her a rose bush for her garden after saving my pocket money for a month. She cared for that for years .

If anything, the BBC should be paying us reparations for inflicting their content on the population.

I saw one parked up in a pub car park and I got chatting to the driver..the external aerials were not connected to anything and all the radio equipment looked dated and he admitted that he was paid to just sit in prominent areas for a few hours then move on..

It's absolutely wild to think that they BROADCAST a signal completely in the open, then try to charge people for listening to it. That's akin to standing on a rooftop, singing a song at the top of your lungs, and then trying to charge anyone who decided to stop and listen for concert admission fees.

I was a bit poor in 2010 so I took a break from paying the licence and decided just to watch iPlayer and other internet streams. 14 years later I must have saved over £2,000. I stopped watching iPlayer when the law changed, but to be honest I don't need that either. There's so much good content here on YouTube, so absolutely no need for a licence. Thanks RM!

How detector vans work. They have aerials on the roof, and all sorts of gubbins. However the most important peice of kit they have? The list of unlicensed addreses in the glove box.😂

This is so delightful! Imagine if the postman could come in to your house to check if you were watching TV or listening to radio? “Hello? Can you please just deliver any letters or parcels please?”
