Survivors of narcissistic abuse are frequently misdiagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) because their trauma responses—such as emotional dysregulation, intense hypervigilance, and fear of abandonment—closely mimic the diagnostic criteria of BPD NO one ends up with bpd from Narc abuse they end up with complex post-traumatic stress disorder

My bipolar, BPD, depression, and anxiety all disappeared when I finally got some ADHD medication and started accommodating my autism. <br> Something that bothers me is how survival techniques are framed as a "personality disorder." If I have maladaptive survival techniques, there's a darn good chance I have trauma. Why are we framing trauma as a personality trait? I was given a BPD traits diagnosis (no assessment, just pure vibes with the older male psychiatrist) and then essentially made to feel like it was a shameful existence and I was to blame. No therapy. He knew I had trauma in my past. Told me I lacked stable relationships. I had just ended my 16 year marriage due to toxicity. When I shared my suspicions of autism and ADHD, I was told that because I could string words together to answer questions, I couldn't possibly be autistic and it would be low on the list of things to deal with... He then re-added my old bipolar diagnosis to my current file. I left his "care" shortly after. He refused to acknowledge my autism diagnosis when I passed it to him. Said it was not valid and he would not use it because he couldn't read the graphs. 🙄. I have so much medical trauma it's not funny. I was nearly 45 when I got my diagnosis. My life has improved so much since I started accommodating my autistic needs. I never had any success with any of the treatments I was prescribed for depression, bipolar, anxiety etc. We need to begin training doctors differently. I don't know how, but something needs to change. If you can't do a differential for autism, you should not be able to give one for a personality disorder. You could be doing more harm than good, in my own opinion. But it is just that, my own opinion.

I was diagnosed firstly with depression - even though I insisted I wasn't depressed and antidepressants made no difference, then later with cyclothymia and given lamotrigine which also made no difference whatsoever. About twenty years later, aged 64, I finally got a diagnosis of autism and everything clicked into place.

I am 65 and had a difficult childhood into my twenties. I suffered depression early, with valid reasons. I have been diagnosed thus far, with depression, bipolar ( after one hour session with psychiatrist, on my second visit he told me he no longer thought that ) then CPTSD with BPD traits. The CPTSD made sense to me, ( I researched it A LOT) Then two years ago, someone told me they thought I had ADHD. Someone who themselves had ADHD ( yeh I know I know ) I was positively assessed as ADHD, but can not afford a diagnosis. I now feel I am AUDHD with CPTSD, which does not affect me so much now. Understanding my ND has helped me more than any therapist could have done. It is like the game connect four CLICK CLICK CLICK. My daughter is 37 and I feel now has autism ( and OCD) We were missed and misdiagnosed. It is astoundingly sad.

The people doing all the misdiagnosing are clearly the ones with the worst disorder

Bpd / EUPD is most likely ADHD / Autism mixed with trauma. Add in puberty.<br>I loathe the BPD / EUPD dx as it is often given by older male psychs to younger vulnerable women. It is then a case that the woman will then be dismissed at future healthcare appointments when they are unwell.

54 and diagnosed last year. I've had CBT, talking therapy, hypnotherapy, guided meditation, acupuncture and more.<br>For 10 years I seriously considered I maybe possessed. Seriously.<br>I finally got the autism diagnosis, a couple of years of research before and more since, I finally make sense to me.

If using the DSM for “diagnosis” remember that this book of standards was developed as a billing code manual. Groups of symptoms so overlapping that a person can be shafted for life. Whether they fit or not with the reasons for their presentation.<br> Fashion in diagnosing also corresponds with drug formulations and the sales pitches to prescribers.<br> Meanwhile, most people are seeking help and wish to feel better. The life-long sentence of most labels is often a hinderance to health.

Preference for diagnosis on the basis of anything other than truth inherently distorts the diagnostic process, and gets us into problems of secondary gains etc. “Who wants to be emotionally unstable?”

I was recommended a BPD support group program over the phone a few months ago, which seemed odd to me because I'd familiarized myself with BPD over time and didn't feel that my struggles matched. <br>Incidentally, the reason I'd familiarized myself with BPD was because I took up an interest in psychology years ago. The reason I took up an interest in psychology was because I found people difficult to understand and their motivations or behaviors difficult to predict or navigate. I thought that a better understanding of psychology would help me understand people more like an equation and less like a series of unpredictable separate events. <br><br>... I saw a psychiatrist in person yesterday and within 20 minutes was booked for an autism referral. <br>Funny how life goes.
