  There are many, many argument's as to who saved Gettysburg. Sycle's moving forward actually served as a buffer, Buford picking the high ground and delaying and the list goes on. But Chamberlain was not the end of the union Army as the book and movie contend. There was an entire Corp behind Little Round Top. Had the broken troops  of the Confederates reached Chamberlin's position, the 6th (I think) could have crushed them. The Confederates were not doing well at all on the western slope at all. And Oats men too were tired and out of water and ammo. Just saying.

  What Chamberlain did at Gettysburg on July 2nd 1863, was just one of the Union armies turning points of the Civil War. Been to Gettysburg battlefield many times. There are alot places just off the beaten paths that tell alot of different stories. Nice to explore places that are not on the main tour. For anyone interested in other people's comments on other regiments, a great book is The Life and Death of the 1st Minnesota.

  This is one of the greatest moments of that dreadful war, and Joshua Chamberlain and his 20th Maine troops performed what is very close to a miracle as they swept down that rocky slope with no bullets and bayonets fixed.  As I read about the American Civil war and watched documentaries like this one, I lost count of the number of times I was forced to wonder in amazement at the the awful conditions these men endured between battles and how they managed so often to rise to the challenge in spite of everything conspiring to undermine their efforts and prevail against all odds.  The word "awesome" is badly overused today, but stories like this fully deserve that word when describing them.

  Chamberlain deserves the credit he has received for his command at Little Round Top of that there is no question, There is another man who saved the Union at Gettysburg and he gets little credit, he was one of the oldest men serving the Union during the Civil War, his name was Gen. George Sears Greene. I suggest that everyone who considers them self a Civil War authority should know about George Sears Greene and how his willingness to defy his orders and guide his men to dig in, build makeshift breastworks at Culps Hill and prepare for a Confederate onslaught. His 1,350 man brigade would soon face five Confederate brigades in a wave after wave in one of the few night assaults to take place during the Civil War, the 62 year old Greene appeared to be everywhere along the lines that night, rallying his men to hold their lines until the Rebels finally withdrew. I hold both of these men, Chamberlain and Greene in equal esteem, they were at  the extreme ends of the Union line, if either had failed, the Confederates would have turned the Union line, the out come would have been much different.

  I've always admired the fighting spirit and grit of the Army of Northern Virginia but the action of the 20th Maine at Gettysburg has always been an inspiration to me as a soldier, Joshua Chamberlain is the truest American hero.

  Anyone interested in this story should also check out that of the 1st Minnesota.  Positioned at the other end of Sickles' line, they were used to "plug the gap" against two brigades, over 1600, charging confederates.  Hancock saw the regiment, saw the hole and the approaching Confederates, and simply ordered "Charge those lines" (or depending on source, "Take those colors").  262 men went out (6:1 odds), only 47 came back.  But they stopped those Confederates dead in their tracks long enough for Hancock to get reinforcements in place.  If they hadn't, the Confederates would have split the entire Southern end of the Union line off from the rest.  So they saved the day, too.  They don't get enough credit.

  Visiting the Gettysburg battlefield, especially after having read some about it, was one of the highlights of my life. <br>Little Round Top for sure, but Devils Den, Wheat Field, Peach Orchard, Cemetery Ridge, Pickets Charge…<br>Took my breath away.

  😂 &nbsp;I use to work at a Civil War battle field park. &nbsp;Once upon a time a visitor told me that the really Gettysburg hero was NOT Colonel Joshua Chamberlain! &nbsp;According to him there was a company commander in the 20th Maine who was hard of hearing. &nbsp;The visitor said that Chamberlain gave the command to &quot;prepare to make the charge&quot;. &nbsp;The company commander miss heard the command and thought he had heard Chamberlain &nbsp;ordered the charge. &nbsp;The captain got up and charged down the hill. &nbsp;The men of his company held their captain in such high esteem that they followed the captain down the hill, and the other nine companies followed suit, before Chamberlain actually called the advance! &nbsp;True or false? &nbsp;True or false, it does make a good story!
