  For Santa Ana's guys to even be vertical and holding a rifle after that long march through the desert is gnarly. Folks were badass back in the day.

  What makes matters worse for the Mexicans is that Santa Anna had previously ordered all the wells between Santillo and San Luis Potosi destroyed to prevent Taylor marching by that route. And then he marched his own army along it and then back again. And he did this to fight an enemy that had already been neutralized by the destruction of the wells. He threw away 8000 soldiers that could have been useful against Winfield Scott.

  This was not really a single battle but a series of separate engagements and overall, a complicated series of manuvers.

  Interesting if grim fact: Henry Clay jr. was temporarily buried in Mexico where his burial site was photographed. This was also possibly the first photograph of an unburied coffin, likely taken by the same unidentified photographer who took a series of daguerrotypes related to the war.

  On February 23, 1847, Yell was killed in action at the Battle of Buena Vista at age 49. He was originally buried on the battlefield in Mexico. His body was removed and returned to Arkansas for burial at Waxhaws Cemetery in Fayetteville. When Evergreen Cemetery was established in the city, the Freemasons arranged for his body to be relocated and reinterred in the Masonic section of that cemetery.[1]

  Taylor is one of my ancestors through marriage. He was a good general for this type of war.

  Taylor was a badass. Its a shame we didnt get a full presidential term out of him. He would no doubt been more effective than the 3 that came after him
