Can Plug-in Solar Work With Existing Solar & Batteries?

Can you add plug-in solar and batteries to a home that already has residential solar and battery storage? Yes — but if you have multiple independent battery systems monitoring the same household demand, you need to think carefully about how those systems interact. In this video I explain how I run residential solar, a SolarEdge home battery system and plug-in solar/battery systems together in the same house without having multiple inverters constantly competing to supply the same load. We start with the basics: how a solar inverter supplies your home, how a battery responds to household demand and how a CT clamp (Current Transformer) allows the inverter to determine whether electricity is being imported from or exported to the grid. Then we look at what can happen when two independent battery systems both monitor the same grid connection. Both can potentially react to the same load, resulting in one system backing off as the other responds — or, depending on their control behaviour, the systems continually adjusting against one another. My solution is deliberately simple. I give each battery system a different job. My main residential SolarEdge system is my demand system. It dynamically follows the load in the house. My smaller plug-in systems are base-load systems. For example, my EcoFlow system can supply a fixed 450W between 10am and 4pm. If somebody then turns on a 3kW kettle, EcoFlow continues supplying its 450W while the larger residential system supplies the additional demand. The systems therefore don't have to compete for the same job. I also look at how you could add another independent battery, such as a Jackery system, and give that another time slot — perhaps supplying evening base load from 6pm until 11pm. This approach may be particularly useful if: • your existing residential battery is expensive to expand • compatible batteries are no longer available • your inverter can't support additional capacity • you can't find an installer willing to modify an existing installation • you want to expand solar and battery capacity incrementally Where practical, expanding your existing integrated residential solar system is still likely to be the cleanest solution. But plug-in solar and batteries provide another option when that isn't practical or economical. The important idea is not simply that you have two batteries. You have two independent energy systems — and each needs a job. In my setup: Residential solar/battery = follows demand Plug-in solar/battery = supplies base load There are other ways to coordinate multiple battery systems, including Home Assistant, manufacturer APIs and automation, but this video explains the simple approach I use in my own home.
