  Gene Roddenberry was a bomber pilot in the US Army Air Corps during World War II, so he knew the behavior of people in the military and the discipline and professionalism involved in that environment. He knew how the chain of command worked. He was also in the LAPD after the war. But he also loved science fiction. People who have these kind of backgrounds and vision are not around anymore to oversee shows like the Star Trek franchise. Back then they even had real science fiction writers writing episodes.

  Ortegas embodies the lack of professionalism that the post-Abrams crews display. It&apos;s very off-putting.<br>Ortegas feels like a character who came over from Lower Decks.

  i served 20 year in the USN and was part of a bridge crew many times, i dont remember which episode it was because after that episode i decided SNW wasnt worth watching; from my experience, it doesnt matter how &quot;good&quot; she is at her job, Ortegas&apos;s behavior would have immediately warranted her removal from the bridge.

  Yes!! Thank you for addressing this! She’s what broke the camel’s back for me when I stopped watching the show. So damn disrespectful and annoying- unprofessional, in a nutshell. But what pisses me off more is Pike letting her quips and disrespectful behavior towards him go unaddressed. I think maybe once did they have Pike ask her to shut up in some innocuous way. I don’t know if he’s finally reprimanded her because I stopped watching during season two but I’m guessing not.. The show, as a whole, had some good moments until I stopped watching but was generally disappointing. I’ve been binging DS-9 instead.

  She is definitely one of the most obvious symptoms of this &quot;not Starfleet&quot; disease. For me the WORST part is treating Spock like a loveable intern, or that funny Foreign Exchange Student, NOT the Officer he is.

  They gave her the physical trait of a tragic hair cut and the behavioral identity of her job description. There is an entire episode which moves her to the conclusion &quot;I fly the ship&quot; which is something we already knew (but which was apparently a revelation to her). She is underwritten, because she is queer-coded and the show doesn&apos;t want to lose more of its audience share by developing that. Thus, she is a cut-out, a gay-wink, destined to go nowhere as she flies everywhere.

  As Alex Krtzman clearly stated “it’s not about Star Trek but about “the message” and Ortegas, clearly ,embodies many at once.
