  "I still don't recognize the Uhura we met in the original series".  Indeed.  For me, that's true of all the characters.

  The only time I remember Uhura with a phaser in her hand was when she was menacing "Adventure Boy" into a closet in Star Trek III.

  Uhura was one of my favorite characters from the original series. We learn that she is bilingual without hyping her as a linguistics prodigy. An accomplished singer. An aptitude for mathematics. Physically able to hold her own against Mirror Universe Sulu. The only person who can effectively be sarcastic and playful with with Spock, and set boundaries with him in a way that Spock understands. And she doesn't flinch against most enemies/legends who might be intimidating to others. She also has a soft side, a romantic side but she is professional enough to keep that in check. And she is loyal to the captain while also knowing how anf when to question him.

  I certainly agree with you, but I do think they’ve done a bit better with her than they have with most the other legacy characters.

  Great review. &nbsp;I subscribed :). &nbsp;I agree this Uhura in &quot;SNW&quot; isn&apos;t the Uhura in &quot;TOS&quot;. &nbsp;However, even though she&apos;s not an action heroine, we did see Uhura hold her own in &quot;TOS&quot; S2 E4 &quot;Mirror, Mirror&quot;, when she slapped Mirror Sulu and pulled her knife/dagger on him distracting him from the signal coming through his board. &nbsp; <br><br>I don&apos;t think she could defeat a group of Andorran Pirates like a Reacher or Arnold in &quot;Conan The Barbarian&quot;, but she proves in that &quot;TOS&quot; episode she can help with the landing party getting back to their universe.

  My particular pain point with Uhura is the &apos;family dead in shuttle crash&apos; thing. Just... why? Who needed this tragic backstory? <br>I mean, we KNOW why: because SNW has a pathalogical thing about prematurely dead parents. La&apos;an, Chapel, Ortegas, Uhura. Even M&apos;Benga&apos;s daughter was a motherless waif. (Although maybe we could put that last one down to SNW hating kids even more than it does parents. Precisely none of those little suckers thrive.)

  The Uhura in the TOS was sidelined. I didn&apos;t even realize she was fourth in command while watching TOS. I&apos;m glad her character is more round in SNW.
