  No Automatic or manual gearbox.  Outside of small industrial switch engines, please cite one mainline locomotive with a manual or automatic transmission?

  My grandfather used to work for Union Pacific. And he operated just about every locomotive.<br>From 1920 all the way up until 1975. But the one locomotives that he hated, but he operated<br>Was the turbine powered<br>What he wore for hearing protection was none other than the type of hearing protection. You would wear for shooting firearms. Because if you didn&apos;t wear hearing you could seriously damage your hearing.

  I love how the AA20 had wheels that were not even connected to the rails to counter the massive 1 meter swing to make a turn

  If anyone is looking for one of the biggest loco failures, look no further than the &nbsp;German made Krauss Maffei ml 4000 that SP and Rio Grande got suckered into buying in the early sixties. &nbsp;Instead of traction motors, they had hydraulic transmissions putting power to the drivers. It was not a good engineering choice for two railroads where many of their routes were heavy mountain hauling. &nbsp;Rio Grande realized their mistake early on when they sold the three they bought to SP shortly after purchase. &nbsp;And SP dead-lined all of them when EMD&apos;s SD-40&apos;s and 45&apos;s and GE&apos;s U-boats came online in the late sixties. &nbsp;But I will cut some slack for all of the railroads during that time frame in history. &nbsp;All of them needed high horsepower prime movers and they just didn&apos;&apos;t exist yet.
