  There is no record of the ICC "effectively" banning the camelback locomotive. The false claim the ICC banned these locos has been around for a long time, but it is not documented in any ICC records. Some states did ban the loco or require three-man crews so there was someone in the cab on each side of the boiler. Railroads moved the locos to divisions in other states without bans.

  50 plus years ago, I was taught the difference between Mother Hubbards & Camelbacks. Since then, I never confused the two.

  As far as I know I’ve never heard of a camelback having a boiler explosion. Perhaps there was some but I’ve never come across any stories of that happening. As far as the Wooten firebox that was designed to burn anthracite, not the culm produced by the mining of anthracite. The issue with rods breaking wasn’t so much the main and drive rods but the valve gear rods breaking. Since they were closer to the bottom of the engineers cab then the main and drive rods. On some of the larger camelbacks they would have 2 firemen to shovel the coal.

  Living in the northeast Anthracite region we have a special affinity for these locomotives. With a fuel supply only available between Scranton and Reading this was a very special design. One that was unique to the region, that could only work here and nowhere else in America.

That locomotive has occasionally passed through Reading station in England (also pronounced &apos;Redding&apos;...)

  My grandfather used to fire one of those when he worked for the Lehigh Valley Railway and it was a demanding job with two firebox doors and he had to use all his strength to keep the engineer happy and he didn’t stay on that job once he made it to Suspension Bridge and on the rest stop he went down buffalo avenue and secured a new job at Hooker chemical, a better job with less stress and more money
