  The SD40-2 is like the F-14 Tomcat of railroading. Just, unmatched for it's time and purpose.

  SD90MAC-H should made it into the list. I was told that it was a worse kind of locomotive than the AC6000. It wasn't just the engine that was troubled, but also the frame itself.

  All of these END SD50s painted in CSX says that it couldn't have been that bad.

  We had 80 SD45's on the Erie Lackawanna and they were great locomotives. When Conrail took us over, we got to use SD40's, but they did not impress me as tonnage pullers.

  Seems most of these engine busts were due to one repeating problem...cost cutting and rush to market. Surely the lesson here is that to be effective in railroads, you can't cut corners.

  The PA was called an "honorary steam engine" because of the black smoke that it emitted before the turbocharger kicked in.

  Scrapping of the Class 17 was not `only` because of reliability issues at the start (by the end they were up to 72%); the main reason was the speed the railways were changing, thanks to the Beeching report. BR had ordered all of the Type 1s quickly (Class 14 to 20) and with the unprofitable branch lines and freight yards being shut en masse, they had way way too many small locos. The 14`s went first from the South West to the North East, where they then were sold to industrial use. The 16s  went next , both low numbers in class and poor reliability then, the 15s and 17s went because no work; the 20s lasted longer, but by the early 1980s even then they were starting to be scrapped. The caveat being they could be coupled nose to nose for a reasonable type 3 power rating of 2000 hp
