  Vito spent more time and energy over all the decades of his life building something money can't buy, REPUTATION and respect from the right people.  He decided ''makes no difference to me what a man does for a living, but if judges and politicians knew I was dealing in narcotics they wouldn't be my friends anymore''

  Vito grasped that if he agreed and went along, provided the money and protection, asked for, that his payback would be his assassination to remove him from the business.

  When narcotics enter the picture, it'll get them all filthy rich or even richer.  But, it is also the beginning of the end of the Italian Mafia as we know it today.

  Vito miscalculated who was involved, and Tom was correct when they met immediately after returning from California and said that the other families will get involved and then they come after us. Prophetic. <br><br>It was more dangerous not to get involved.

  Didn’t Solazzo know that without Vito all of the protection was gone? Sonny didn’t hold all of those connections.

  Don Corleone says at the meeting of the Commission that this &quot;white powder&quot; will bring us all down, he was right. Drugs destroyed the mafia.

  Don Corleone was both completely justified, and, totally wrong in turning down Sollozo. He was correct, the judges and politicians wouldn&apos;t go along with drugs. But Vito badly underestimated the tsunami of drugs, and money coming towards them. Also, having everybody there in the meeting, should&apos;ve been just the Don and Hagen in the room.
