  Out of the Furnace: not a well known movie, but it's great. In the beginning of the film, Christian Bale's character is offered a glass of whiskey. He at first refuses, then begrudgingly accepts the drink to avoid giving offense. That one drink presumably just puts him over the legal limit. He ends up getting into a car crash that wasn't his fault, killing two people. He ends up serving two years for vehicular manslaughter. In prison, he's unable to pay off the rest of his brother's debt and that leads to his brother getting deeper in the hole with Willem Dafoe's character. That prompts his brother to get into bare knuckle fighting which eventually leads to several deaths in the film. The whole movie exists because of one poor, seemingly innocuous decision to accept a glass of whiskey.

  So, all accurate. &nbsp;But here is the thing. &nbsp;When Vito says it was Barzini all along, he meant all along. &nbsp;Barzini’s manipulation was the Sollozzo proposal itself, not the war after. &nbsp;Barzini was the second most powerful family among the 5 and Don Emilio wants to be number 1. &nbsp;Also there is an undercurrent here which you don’t see in the film itself. &nbsp;Vito is an older generation, more rigid in their rules even as a criminal. &nbsp;Often they given the derogatory nickname “Mustache Pete’s” by younger rising stars like Don Emilio. &nbsp;And truly what you see play out is not that the strongest or most violent win, but the most manipulative. &nbsp;Emilio is the real backer of Sollozzo, who guides him to ask Vito for the deal, knowing full well Vito will refuse, and setting off the chain of events where the Corleones face all 4 other families in a war they cants really win. &nbsp;The only thing Don Barzini failed in was being out manipulated by Micheal (and Vito in the end). &nbsp;Barzini believes the intricate farce that Michael is a weak outsider who makes dumb decisions (like making Carlo something important), lulling him into the false security that the Traitor Tessio will deliver the death blow to the Corleone empire.<br><br>Yes, had Vito chosen differently none of that would have happened but Vito was never going to choose otherwise, and Barzini knew it.<br><br>Also, they never would have moved to Vegas BTW. &nbsp;The whole Vegas family pivot is due to Fredo being sent out there for safety, and the family realizing it was the future for gambling so Michael pivots them west. &nbsp;None of that happens without the war.

  Barizin was behind everything including sollozzo original deal. Barizin would have most &nbsp;likely tried to eventually assassinate Vito to gain power. So the war was probably inevitable.

  Charles Foster Kane never has the affair with Susan Alexander. He becomes governor of NY, reforms government and wins a 3-way race for president in 1920, the first 3rd party or independent to do so, and alters the course of history. Far from a tragic might-have-been.

  We&apos;re forgetting the fact that the sollozo deal was secretly a Barzini plot. If he can get them in the dirty business with him and the tataglias, then the power struggle would eventually favor Barzini, but erode the Corleone family the worst since their built over decades political contacts would turn away.

  Fredo still has an opportunity with Hyman Roth. Fredo is still pushed aside regardless if Michael takes charge or not. I think Sonny would still disregard Fredo, and essentially put him int &quot;the corner&quot;.

  Also, with no war, Sonny never gets killed and probably takes over the family when Vito dies. Probably becomes the instrument of the family&apos;s downfall due to his temper getting the better of him.
