  Carlo was Barzini’s “known” inside man. Keeping Carlo alive enabled the Corleone’s to control the information that Barzini received.

  Exactly right. If they had killed Carlo early, it would have alerted the rest of the Five Families that revenge was impending. Michael did it the smart way.

  If they killed Carlo immediately, it would have put all their other enemies, the stronger and more formidable ones, on alert and less likely to fall victim to their plan, prolonging the conflict. If they waited, which they did, they wouldn&apos;t suspect anything.<br><br>Michael gives some insight into the Corleone mind in part 2 as he spoke to Frank Pentagali: &quot;I want him (Roth) completely relaxed...&quot;<br><br>If you recall, when the hits were being carried out, every victim was completely surprised and unsuspecting.<br><br>Killing Carlo immediately would have made that impossible.

  They (Michael and Vito) were playing the long game. But you left out one important detail—Tom Hagen’s visual signal to Clemenza. He deliberately loosens his necktie, signaling to Clemenza to go ahead with the garroting execution.

  I have absolutely NO head for strategy! Putting all the pieces together like this feels like someone demonstrating how a magic trick is done. I’m just in awe!

  I&apos;ve always been a bit surprised that the Barzinis didn&apos;t simply disappear Carlo&apos;s ass after Sonny&apos;s brutal slaying and been done with him in the first place. <br>He was clearly a snivelling, easily manipulated coward, a man who was by far the weakest link in their plans and someone to whom they owed absolutely no loyalty whatsoever. <br>There was also the very real possibility that at any point he could have revealed the extent of their involvement in this devious scheme to the Corleones if subjected to the right &quot;persuasion,” anyway. <br>It didn&apos;t make any sense whatsoever to allow him to remain alive, given that if he simply vanished one day, the trail of information would have ended with him and the Corleones would never have known what had happened or who had truly been responsible for attempting to topple their powerful empire from the shadows.

  Thank you for clearing that up. I always wondered why Carlo was allowed to live when he was so obviously guilty of setting up Sonny.
