  The gate DOES in fact, negotiate. You can barter with it. You just have to offer it something equivalent but you CAN, in fact, CHOOSE what to pay the gate, assuming that what you offer is sufficient. Thats how Ed could CHOOSE what to sacrifice to bring his brothers soul back in the armor.<br><br>The biggest problem with this, is that you lose any knowledge of the gate when you leave its realm. You are only gifted the knowledge of whats on the other side, not of the gate itself. And also how Ed could willingly sacrifice his Alchemy to it. And, if you were forced to break the rules, the Gate is lenient, such as when Mustang could offer a philosophers stone to get his sight back.

  Truth&apos;s absolute delight that Ed learned his lesson, that an alchemist finally made the correct choice, always makes me smile.

  The fact that he was always able to get his brother back, the choice was always right there to make. He went on his whole journey to learn to make it. :&apos;)

  I think something else to note is that when Ed sacrificed his gate and said how he didn&apos;t need alchemy since he had his friends, Truth was pleased by it. He even said how Ed was &quot;correct&quot; and how he had &quot;defeated&quot; them. <br><br>This coming just after Father being taken and locked behind the gate with Truth disapproving does give the idea that this was the goal Truth had in mind and that this was what Father could never understand that he was supposed to do

  Symbolism on the tolls paid:<br>Ed - his right hand man (Al) and his support (leg)<br>Al - a mother&apos;s or brother&apos;s warmth<br>Izumi - depriving her sense of motherhood<br>Mustang - the vision to see the future<br><br>Tbh, the Gate was lenient with Roy because he was forced and later accepted the repayment of a Philosopher Stone to retrieve his vision

  <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6F56dB_5mQ&amp;t=309">5:09</a> I think theres a deeper reason to why he gave up his door. In the beginning of the anime Alchemy is portrayed as this super power or thats how edward sees it and thinks alchemists are better than everyone else because they use science and alchemy to solve issues. At the end when truth asks &quot;are you sure you want to give up your door to just be a human?&quot; Edward says &quot;thats all i ever was a human who couldnt even save a little girl&quot;. It shows he now understands that alchemy could never help him when he really needed it, his friends and family did. Thats why he says &quot;besides who needs alchemy when i got them&quot; he humbles himself infront of truth.

  This is the closest I&apos;ve ever seen someone argue the validity of the OG anime&apos;s ending. I get it isn&apos;t what the (Mangaka?) had in mind but the true weight of decision and sacrifice that the ending had was truly incredible. It really was bittersweet and I don&apos;t think anything conveyed that as well as that first run.

  Commenting on around <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6F56dB_5mQ&amp;t=960">16:00</a>, it&apos;s important to remember what Truth reacted with, when Edward sacrificed his gate of truth.<br><br>&quot;You did it-- that&apos;s the right answer!&quot;<br><br>It was equal parts shock and gratitude for Ed understanding. Still shakes me to my core when I rewatch the scene.

  In the 2003 anime I was floored by what the gate was and what was powering the alchemy in their world. They mention a surge in people being able to use alchemy. It’s because of all the death during the war on the other side of the gate. I thought that was so amazingly dark and sad. I love both series, but a piece of me will always lean towards the first anime a little bit more.
