One benefit of this design wasn’t mentioned; It removes a major source of stress to the drivetrain, shifting while under load. Since the user has to pedal backwards to shift the chain is always slack while shifting. This is pretty brilliant.

not only is it just as reliable, it’s more reliable if anything because if anything goes wrong such as a chain snapping or gear going weird, you’ve got another one

This is the paradigm shift we need, making things that are reliable, durable, simple and repairable, instead of adding pointless bells and whistles just to be able to charge more, ending in a landfill in a short time. The fact that initiatives like this exist restores a litte of my faith in humanity, which has been taking a beating lately.
