Re: gilets, yes, there's a place for them. If you're riding in a very hilly or mountainous area with lots of descending then they're ideal for those frequent and/or long downhills where your chest can get cold. And when you start climbing the next uphill you simply drop the zip halfway down to stop overheating.

If you are even older, you will remember frames came with studs under the top tube for fitting a pump - spring in the pump kept them in place :) Worked well.

My gilet has waterproof/windproof front and an open mesh back which I find the right recipe.

During rain, the gilets or a waterproof vest will keep your core body temperature warm. I used to shiver violently without one when caught in a rain with strong wind.

I can't get onboard with electric pumps. I keep a small pump mounted to the fork on my gravel bike. Unlimited air, one less thing to think about having to charge, and no battery to degrade forcing me to go on a "pump subscription" so to speak. My small mounted pump lasts years and years, zero hassles.

Frame pumps were good for fending off aggressive dogs! I remember being in a group ride with a former Olympian, who cracked the scone of an aggressive farm dog who went yelping all the way back home!

Frame pumps - they were so much a fixture of cycling that most bikes had permanent lugs braised or welded onto the frame to fix the pump to.

My frame pumps gave approximately one psi per stroke with a 20mm tyre.

Frame pumps were great for impromptu roadside visits from farm dogs not pleased you were on the road in front of their acreage, lol. '82 in Kansas on my Batavus and here comes Torpedo, unclip the pump and wave it like a light saber, all while continuing forward and imploring the dog to go home. We had skills. 😀

Back in the day, I had a frame pump, yes....oval crank, friction shifters on the down tube, clip..pedals and LOVED every day I spent on that bike 😂🎉
