I'm going to save myself 17 minutes and guess that it's because they cant earn $25 million a year doing anything else.

I mean, if they can still play, and teams are still offering them contracts, why not? The window to play professional sports is extremely small.

40 is the new 30. Better medical, better nutrition , better pay, and the game is less violent

clowney is 33 and just had 8.5 sacks in just 13 games. and he's always been more a run stopper. he's still really good

Tom Brady played 23 seasons and was winning Superbowls all the way to the end.

Aaron Rodgers will be 22 years deep into his career and still playing at a high level. Not his old self, but his OLD self is still a good QB.

Brett Favre played 20 years and was knocking on the door of the Superbowl and got smashed against the Saints during the bounty-gate game. He kept playing because that dude was just tough as nails.

Peyton Manning played 18 years and was about 2 years past when he should have retired, but he still won another Superbowl because of an incredible defense. Then he rode off into the sunset. A picture-perfect ending that every other player strives for.

Ray Lewis played 17 seasons. Still a juggernaut on defense, he played in and won one more Superbowl and rode off into the sunset as a champion. He could've played another couple years, but there's nothing more satisfying than leaving a Superbowl champion.

Randy Moss played 14 seasons and definitely could've played another couple years. Unfortunately, he never won a Superbowl and is arguably one of the best players to never win one.

There's always that chance of winning that last Superbowl and leaving the league on the highest note and solidifying their legacy.

It's all they know. Pop Warner, high-school, college, NFL. They have been playing football as long as they remember. All of their self worth and sense of achievement is tied to it. Suddenly it's all gone. Not hard to figure out.

Let's be honest though. Most old guys in the NFL were legends. You gotta be crazy good to stay in the league for 15+ years. By then, you already have enough money and you just want to reach the mountain top and ride off into the sunset. Peyton Manning was the perfect story. 18 years for number 18, won Superbowl 50 thanks to his insane defense, and it he was about 2 years deep into his decline. Every player wants THAT
