  I'm a 70 year old songwriter who is still playing and writing new songs. Been playing in public for over 50 years. I've never come close to any recognition, but tht has never had anything to do with writing. I wrte songs because I get ideas and I want to see where they go. Sometimes a story just needs to get told. My favorite quote is from Noel Paul Stookey of Peter Paul and Mary... "Sometimes you get used somehow...you become the instrument of what it is that what's to be said." When writing, follow your heart.

  I am 53, been a songtown member for a year and a half now and I met Rudy Gunn , who is a Canadian Country Music Artist and he helped me finish the song HEAVEN FOR THIS COWBOY. It has been nominated for a Josie Music Award in Nashville this comming November. I hope this opens doors to more cowriting opportunities and maybe getting some songs cut.

  The best competition I have is the song I wrote yesterday. I learn new things everyday...whether it's new tech that can advance my production chops, creative writing studies or in putting new information like reading  or watching movies; my output can, does and will get better. Bottom line is a lifetime of learning is my path to songwriting success...everyone has a different description of success...but writing my best songs = success for me even if they never see the light of day. Just Sayin' Y'all

  One thing I've noticed about both you guys, Clay and Marty, is that you pepper your speaking with quotes that range from Socrates to Mark Twain to Walt Whitman. Good writers are also voracious readers. I get so many ideas from a single line in a poem, sonnet or novel! I had one song that I wrote in a motel room that was built around a slogan I saw on a billboard across the street!

  Every “new to me” guitar I obtain always has at least one song locked in it somewhere. I just have to find it. At least that’s what I tell myself. They all do have one in there somewhere.

  The first song (in the current era) that I played to a friend, they cried and swore and hit me. I knew i was onto something, but not everyone had that reaction. She ended up coming to the mixing session and loved it. I had borrowed her 12-string for the recording.

  These feel a bit like how there are stages of grief.  10 stages of songwriting self doubt.  I’ve been through or am in so many of these.  Thanks for the reminder to push on.

  I met Bill Bottrell, who produced both Michael Jackson and Sheryl Crow, in a dive bar in Lakewood CO several years ago. I was part of the band hosting a weekly Sunday night jam and his girlfriend asked if her boyfriend could play a set the following weekend when he came to town to see her.<br><br>All my personal contacts were from way back in the early Seventies, but I kept abreast of the music business even though I was no longer chasing the brass ring. We talked for hours after he finished his solo accoustic set. You never know when and where you might meet someone.

  I&apos;ve improved on some of my favorite original songs just by listening to these podcasts for 6 weeks. I&apos;ve just begun dabbling into some of your simple lessons. Bless you 😇
