"Now, it's being quoted on wedding invitations."<br><br>Reminds me of Sting, and his horror at people choosing "Every Breath You Take," a STALKER SONG, for their wedding songs.<br><br>It is ONLY romantic if the person being watched and stalked WANTS to be watched and stalked.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MgetWC-FLAk&t=505">8:25</a> Rochester's decision to house Bertha in his own home was not an act of kindness on his part. I've seen arguments about that but it's simply not true. When he talks about her to Jane, his words are filled with loathing and hatred. He calls her "demon" and "fiend" in such vitriolic tones that Jane is alarmed. The woman can't help being mad, she points out. So his hatred of her is unjust and unkind.<br><br>I believe he houses her in his attic because no one living knows his actual relationship to her and this is the best way to keep her under lock and key and with supervision that he can trust. In an asylum, Bertha might have a lucid moment and tell her keepers her exact relationship with Rochester and he was desperate to keep that knowledge hidden. That enabled him to gallivant around Europe for the better part of ten years, looking for a worthy replacement for her. Also, his refusal to place her in a proper asylum endangered his life, the life of her brother, his guests, Adele and the entire household whenever she had one of her violent, psychotic episodes. He may have been "kind" to her but it was at the expense of the other people in his life.

I’d love to see a continuation of the story were she acknowledges she loves him but leaves him, and creates her own life and way of caring for people whod be shoved away in a cellar or attic. Maybe she meets a dr, maybe she never falls in love but she finds a aense of self worth that could never be shaken.

The Bronte Sisters were really the Stephen Kings of their time. With the exception of "The Professor", all of their books have a horror element. Even Agnes Grey has the budding serial killer child.

I love Jayne Eyre so much. It is so layered and complex. It <b>is</b> a love story, Jane learned to love her whole self. The movie version with William Hurt is really good and close to the novel.

This whole series makes me want to give reading another try, even though I'm always struggling with books

Jane: For those interested in another take on the madwoman in the attic, I recommend the novel "Wide Sargasso Sea" by Jean Rhys, which creates a full backstory for Bertha's character and goes on to tell some of "Jane Eyre" from her perspective. There are also a couple of film adaptations.

The book The Wide Sargasso Sea is a story about Bertha before she married Rochester and then right after. And it gives a really different perspective about Bertha as a Caribbean woman. Your point about Bertha and Jane being two sides of the same coin essentially blew my mind; especially since I’ve read both Sargasso Sea and Jane Eyre.

A TTRPG campaign/one shot inspired by Jane Eyer could be so fun and creepy. You could have the party hired to check out an old mansion being haunted by some sort of wraith. The party needs to lay the wraith to rest and they find out the only way to do that is find the body of the woman hidden in the walls. Or maybe the wrathful spirits the missing half of the lady of the house's soul that holds her passion and rage that her husband took from her to make her a more 'acceptable wife'.

I got married to 2004 and my partner was watching this with me and when you got to the "living in the wrong timeline," we both just absolutely lost it because there's NO WAY we've been married for more than two decades. 😂
