Remember y'all, Albert Einstein, the "world's smartest man", had a wife who co-authored much of his research and who was never credited. This has been happening for far too long. RIP Mileva Marić

The purpose of art is to connect us more deeply with our humanity. If an "artist" forsakes their empathy and their humanity in the pursuit of creating "great art" then they have lost the fucking plot.

Hayao Miyazaki comes to mind as a man who can not only write incredible female characters, he doesn't sexualise them either

Emily Blunt spoke out about how on the set of Oppenheimer, when she'd come in with Ugg boots to wear during breaks, Nolan would look at her up and down with a disappointed face (she even compared him to Miranda Priestly in that regard). Apparently he forbids women from wearing Ugg boots on set during breaks because it "takes away from the immersion". But what else are actresses supposed to do? Stay in uncomfortable period-typical heels all day long, in what is often inclement weather?

I knew Shelley Duval would get brought up. I feel so bad for her. She put on a stunning performance but had to deal with constant torture

Tangential to the dead wife trope - the dead mom trope by Disney.

    ‘A strong, Oscar-worthy performance isn’t the same as a richly-written character.’

The strongest performance in Kenneth Branagh’s Hamlet is Judy Dench. Who plays Hecuba, a character not in Hamlet except in a speech made by one of the ‘Players’. He says she cried when she saw her husband Priam dead. That’s it. Dench walks on screen, says ‘Priam!’, and blows every other performance away.

Shakespeare and Branagh didn’t do that.

Omg, we are finally talking about this! As a young woman, whenever I met the concept of something ''great'' or genius, I always doubted if there really was anything that special behind these things, if I couldn't see it. So much art is praised while being utterly misogynistic and questionable, that I kind of came to the conclusion that some directors are only considered geniuses because they give their main audience what they want. In a sence, their art isn't ground-breaking for the whole society. Their art gives men what they want, so they like it. Personality cults are a thing too. I fucking love being free of those concepts of ''genius'' art forced on me. They don't treat things made for women with the same respect

The writers weave a story out of nothing. Actors change the medium from written to visual. Editors take chaos and turn them into masterpieces. Support staff keeps everything running smoothly. Music and VFX add depth and emotion.

Directors get all the credit

You know one thing that killed the myth of abuse being essential for a good performance for me? Critical Role and Dimension 20. All you need to do is see the performances Matt Mercer, Aabria Iyengar, Brendan Lee Mulligan, Jasmine Bhullar and others could get out of their players just with some gentle prodding and a few dice rolls.

This pretty much sums up my feelings on auteur theory, and I agree with all of it.

I just want to add that Kubrick was ALSO abusive to his male actors. The eyes scene in A Clockwork Orange was unplanned, and he surprised McDowell with it on the day (and scratched his eyes in doing so). He tried to prevent Matthew Modine from attending the birth of his child, and Modine threatened to cut himself in order to be excused (he wasn't even needed for a scene for three days).

This doesn't refute your argument, as Kubrick still only got away with it because he was a man. But I think it's worth noting that this stigma is also often harmful to other men.
