In Bulgaria where the folk tails with baba Yaga and the old lady was never villinised. As children we learned that she was a helper in the way for imagined us as the main character to take responsibility and problem solve. It was always about doin* the dark strange thing and not being afraid of it, one task after another. Baba yaga is like the wise woman who is the only one who can help in a tragic conundrum, with unforeseen to us ways.

I always liked Baba Yaga stories as a child. She was understandable, straightforward, and fair. The tale of Lazy Tinka still lives vaguely in my memory for 30+ years. I imagine she'd have the sign: Unattended/Unruly Children will be traded for ingredients.

You know... I think that's why Baba Yagas story really stayed with me... the house yes, but also that she was fierce but also fair... and when I was needing some kind of stability that was what I needed.

My grandma raised me on Baba Yaga stories, the first was actually a picture book called Boney Legs, I still remember the voices she would do. I have always been fascinated by Baba Yaga she's a very different kind of character then we're used to seeing in a lot of storytelling. A beautifully uncontainable powerful woman.

Sadly, evil people DO eat stupid people, a question shouldn't be an existential issue. However Baba Yaga isn't doing that, she's asking for an honest answer to where a character is going. Honesty can be hard at times...

In the stories I've read, what stands out for me is that Baba Yaga likes and rewards clever girls and punishes naughty boys. She's a feminist icon before such words ever existed. She was self reliant, harsh but fair and had her own house that could take her wherever she wanted. Who wouldn't want a house like that?

Baba Yaga may go back to the old Mesopotamian goddess Bau also called Baba. Bau was a goddess of medicine and of midwifes and may have created humanity by some traditions. This may reflect why Baba Yaga flies on a giant wooden mortar as there is an association with medicine there. Bau was associated loosely with snakes, swans and scorpions. Her husband was the god Ningirsu who was associated with war, thunderstorms and agricultural fertility. Ningirsu was often confused with the god Ninurta. Bau may have also been married to the war god Zababa. Baba Yaga is often associated with 3 horsemen (red, white and black) who may as they are sometimes depicted as knights go back to how Ningirsu, Ninurta and Zababa were war gods. As another side note in Japan there is the yokai Onibaba. Baba is a general term for old women. Onibaba had once been a nanny who was give the task of collecting a baby's liver. One thing lead to another and she became a ogre like cannibal. One has to wonder that during the days of the silk road that the worship of Bau/Baba went north and to the east with baba becoming a common word for an elderly woman before the myth evolved into Baba Yaga and Onibaba.
