Dorian.
I admit I’ve never actually read the book, though I’m generally aware of the plot via cultural osmosis. I’m not sure how to articulate it, but there’s something about him that strikes me as being a very particular kind of coward. There is a malignant narcissism there, but there’s also a terror of ever really being known. And the worse
The portrait gets, the scarier the idea of anyone knowing the real him must have become. I think that’s where the horror really comes in; in one’s own knowledge of the every widening gap between image and reality of the self, in the hidden, ever increasing self loathing, and in the anxiety of anyone ever finding out and hating the real you as much as you hate yourself. And while that is extremely human, and incredibly common, that level of inauthenticity also strikes me as rather cowardly.
It’s a remarkable critique of not just individuals, but of society as a whole. Oscar Wilde must have been a very brave man indeed.

21:07 a key bit of context ; what they meant by “gross indecency” is being gay/queer. If you want more information on Oscar Wilde himself I highly recommend Kaz Rowe’s video on the subject, Wilde was a fascinating person and one of my personal favorite historical figures. Great video btw, I’ve been enjoying knitting while listening to the stories. Dorian!

Wilde also was commenting on the very Victorian English habit of ascribing morality to appearances. They were obsessed with the idea that bad character could be seen, like a fat person MUST be sinfully gluttonous or he wouldn’t be fat. This is why the portrait is so shocking. Victorians would never believe a beautiful person could do or be evil. And therefore pretty people moved in society without reproach, wearing the disguise of angels. We’re having a resurgence of ascribing moral purity to western beauty standards again.

What you said in the intro about Public Life vs. Private Life and Accountability seems like the kind of themes that several Victorian era authors wrote about. Stevenson's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde seems to be written along similar themes.
Also, "Dorian".

Not sure if I have the quote exactly right but I love Lord Henry's line that goes "I choose my friends for their looks, my acquaintances for their wealth and my enemies for their intellect, one can never be to careful when choosing ones enemies." Definitely one of my favourite books, Wilde also has some great short stories. The movie is pretty good as well, they use an Egyptian cat statue to explain how the wish was granted.

This has been one of my favorite books since I was a teenager. When I was 20 I got into a relationship with an extreme narcissist, I had introduced the book to him, and after some years he ended up legally changing his name TO Dorian. He was so vain he looked up to and found comfort in Dorian Grey, and in retrospect that was actually really crazy. I still refer to him as Dorian out of overall my moral respect for name changes and the ability to do so I guess even if you kinda suck, but also because it’s just so genuinely fitting, him changing his name was like he was trying to literally embody that character trope 😂 somehow it made me hate him more and love the book more all at the same time.

    Dorian!

I feel like a lot of people who live with abuse pick up that Dorian Grey outer self. My family didn't know what I was going through because I looked "ok". You hear all the time when someone passes that it was "So sudden". Being seen is hard, sometimes its like admitting defeat.
