  I was a Marine on the U.S.S Wasp in 1994 and we separated all trash; paper, food scraps, plastic, and aluminum cans into large 5ft tall paper trash bags. I remember there almost was a fight between a Marine and sailor when the Marine, armed with a camcorder, was filming all of the trash being thrown overboard. I didn&apos;t consider myself to be an environmentalist, but I remember feeling sad at the sight of 30+ large trash bags floating behind us.<br>Glad we&apos;re doing better.

  Back in the mid &apos;70&apos;s once we got out into international waters, all trash and whatnot got pitched over the side. And an aircraft carrier generates a whole lot of garbage everyday.

  I served abord the USS America CVA-66 between June 1974 and July 1976. We threw every bit of unprocessed waste off the fantail (back of ship on main deck) directly into the ocean. A few days before one Thanksgiving they told us that we wouldn&apos;t be able to go home. That we had to go to sea. The ship received many thousands of pounds of turkeys. All of a sudden the ship&apos;s deployment was canceled and they allowed us to go home. About 22,000 pounds of turkeys were thrown into the ocean, Even the sharks had Thanksgiving that year!

  I did a WESTPAC on the Hamcock in 1963 and had to do galley duty for a month before I got my crow. &nbsp;Started in the skullery at the slop chute and then went to the garbage grinder. &nbsp;2 of us would carry the galvanized garbage cans full (actualy only 3/4 full so as not to spill it) of mostly liquid waste along a passageway over several knee knockers and then down 3 or 4 levels &nbsp;to the grinder located &nbsp;just above the waterline on the starboard side. &nbsp;The grinder was a large tub with a cutter like in a sink disposal that ground up the food waste and discharged it out the hull. &nbsp;We were constantly taking an empty can up to the galley and bringing a full one down during mess hours.<br>After meals, we would carry empty carboard boxes and wooden vegetable crates to the fantail and throw them over board. &nbsp;If air ops werent being conducted, we got to sit out there and take a break in the cool breeze.<br>NOT my best memories of Naval Service.<br>Years later after a Masters in Environmental Engineering, I did 25 yrs of environmental compliance at municipal wastewater plants!

  I was 11B in 2006. I told all my civilian friends. The amount of work that is done that no one wants to do to support me pulling a trigger is astonishing

  I happy to see that the navy is finally doing something about their waste. When I was in 81-85 on CV-64 EVERYTHING went over board once we got 50 miles from shore.

  I served aboard the USS Coral &nbsp;1984 to 1989 CV-43, made two Mediterranean cruises and every bit of unprocessed garbage was thrown overboard back then, sharks would follow the ship because as a cook we used to dump our garbage over board continuously every day.
