  This coming week, 17 September 2025, the Airborne flag will be flown throughout Arnhem and Oosterbeek. The men who fell are still commemorated by schoolchildren who lay flowers.

  I had an RSM who had been with the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion on D-Day, and later on Operation Varsity. <br>Years later, I attended an event in Normandy in the company of two other 1 Can Para veterans. My old RSM was there, and he approached to greet me. All of a sudden, all three veterans were embracing and enthusiastically greeting each other. <br>It turned out that the RSM and one of my companions had fought together in Normandy as a Vickers team. They hadn&apos;t seen each other since Korea, where both had served in 1RCR in the 1952 Hill 355 battle. <br>... Meanwhile, my other companion was their old 1944 platoon commander.<br>... Small world. <br>I am, and always shall be, immensely proud to have been an airborne officer.

  In 1965-66 as a Boy I met some of them &nbsp;here in Australia &nbsp;Men to Look &nbsp;Up &nbsp;to &nbsp;though &nbsp;it was Wonderful.

  My dad was in both the 1st and 6th airborne divisions. Ended up in the Ox n Bucks light inf. D Company.

  Back in the late 1980s I worked with a guy who was in Arnhem. I love the film a bridge too far but Gordon said it had to many inaccuracies, but he did sign my copy of the book.<br>He was regular army but was locked up for deserting his post after a young lady lured him away, while in prison he was given the option of a court marshal or joining the newly formed Para&apos;s. He was shot in the backside in Italy but returned to the Regiment just in time for Arnhem, he was one of the last out, swimming the Rhine.

  As much as we all admire these brave young men ,it just accured to me when did we start calling them the Red Devils ?.I can&apos;t recall any great ops prior to Arnhem that would credit them with this title. Their counterparts i.e &nbsp;L/Waffe, Fallschirmjagers Green Devils Wehrmacht and S.S. units on the otherhand were active from 1940 . Belgium, Greece , Crete come to mind .

  A boy in my schools father was at Arnhem and had his hands appurtated. He was a lad from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and his surname was Milburn. His sons name was Colin, but although I met him, I could not remember his Christian name. He was cheerful and glad to be alive, he said its better than being blind like his mate!
