  When we relaunched Conan the Barbarian at Titan I made a push to try and curb those exact tendencies you mention and, thankfully, readers and retailers have made the series a winner. <br> <br>1) Each issue has a satisfying chunk of story and action instead of writing for the trade.<br> <br>2) No filler issues. <br><br>3) We have one 4-issue event mini-series each Fall, but otherwise the regular monthly series carries on without letting the event interrupt the flow. <br><br>4) No reboots. We have 28 issues released so far and are going strong. The new #1 from 2023 is the #1 and will be for as long as possible to avoid the diminishing returns on those reboots. <br><br>5) We do have variant covers on the series as a necessary evil in the current market, but try to make sure they reflect the contents inside the issue instead of just being random unrelated pieces of art. <br><br>6) Our series has a consistent continuity across the monthly book and event mini-series. Savage Sword of Conan, our b/w anthology magazine, has done-in-one stories that don’t match the main series, but that also lines up with the way Marvel did it in the 70’s. <br><br>7) Conan is the flagship character.   Buying single issues that are still coming out is a nightmare. I just stick to the trades and collecting old runs.

  This trend of American publishers going in the direction that they’re in with pricing, writing for the trade, continuous reboots, 20 variant covers and crappy storytelling and the mainstream industry won’t survive

  The oldest variant cover I remember is Amazing Spiderman Annual 21 from 1987 where Peter marries MJ. One cover has Peter in a suit and the other has him as Spidey.

  I started reading comics at age 4....collecting at age 9 .... working in a shop at age 14- 27 and collecting and selling at least 5 of my collections.... I was a lifer for sure.... until................... $4.99 price per issue.... I was buying at least 5 to 10 issues per week (depending) and I found I couldn&apos;t afford it anymore .... it sounds crazy but after nearly 40yrs of comics I closed my pull list and actually fought back some tears when I told my local shop owner that I was done..... it was rough.

  The variant covers have turned comic books into baseball cards. They are seen now by the the companies as only collectibles.
