your comment about how disney is obsessed with explaining the lore to everything--it really feels like disney has been super insecure about suspension of disbelief for well over a decade, so they decided to cater to people who need you to explain why an animal talks bc ANIMALS DON'T TALK IN REAL LIFE! and so they talk down to everyone in the process

"Please take my love for these things, commodify it, and sell it back to me." For the longest time Disney was less than receptive to any fan requests and fans were BEGGING for them to do anything. I remember all the huge DIsney nerds online back in the early 00s (me included) who would catalogue and make archives of Disney info (mostly re: the parks and the movies) because it seemed like the company wasn't interested in doing any of that themselves. I think the super fans would have honestly been satiated with crumbs, and wouldn't want anything to spoil their appetite. But once the company began listening, catered to the crowd... and realized that there were big fans who would shell out TOOONS of money for this kind of stuff...... things like D23 are the result, taking full advantage of that obsessive fandom and almost "claiming" it for themselves. It's one of the reasons why I'm no longer an active fan of stuff from the company. It just feels like the fun of being that kind of obsessive fan that cared got commodified to hell with everything else and there's no point anymore. ...anyway, great video! 🤣

The Jenkins quote about the first amendment emerging in the context of a thriving folk culture just kinda made me think about the whole thing where Disney's most popular and beloved movies are largely adaptations of fairy tales, folk tales, mythology, and public domain classic literature, and yet they're famously extremely protective of their IP and also the company that's typically been the most active in extending the length of copyright protections. If they're gonna keep ransacking the public domain to sell it back to us, the least we can do is make fanworks of Caked Up Timon.

They stand, but usually don't walk, on their back legs.
