I could be wrong, but if I recall correctly, Brazil was bidding for the next Olympics and the gov't didn't want Michael showing these parts of Brazil... Gov't ordered soldiers to not let Mike in... Mike contacted the head Drug Lord of that favella who was a big fan and he made the soldiers and police let Mike in... He was air dropped by helicopter and the day before all the people cleaned up the town so it would look good.

Where the music video was filmed, there is now a statue of Michael Jackson, next to a shop selling MJ merchandise, and if you buy something in the shop you can go up to the balcony where he sang.

The story behind this video is so legendary and shows how loved and influential Michael Jackson was. You probably researched some of this already, but I’ll try to explain the full story…

Michael Jackson wanted to film the video in the Santa Marta favela in Rio de Janeiro, an area considered so dangerous that even local police were hesitant to enter. The Brazilian authorities initially tried to ban the filming because they feared that showing poverty and violence would damage Brazil’s image and hurt tourism.

Since the government unable to guarantee safety and the police refusing to secure the area, the production team, including Brazilian filmmaker Katia Lund, had to negotiate directly with Marcinho VP, the powerful local drug kingpin, who controlled the favela. It turned out that Marcinho VP was a huge Michael Jackson fan and he was so excited as soon as he heard Michael Jackson name. He not only granted permission for the filming but he also personally guaranteed complete safety for Michael and the entire cast and crew. He also reportedly said that, “As long as Michael Jackson is in town, this is the safest place on earth, You could leave a million dollars and all the film equipment in the streets — no one will touch it”

The filming went perfectly, with Marcinho VP's gang providing security, and the residents joyfully participating in the video, The video ended up bringing global attention to the community’s culture, struggles, and resilience.

It’s unbelievable how Michael’s music and his message reached every corner of the world. He had fans everywhere — beyond language, beyond culture, beyond race.

Having those people sing and dance along with Michael, gives the video/song a lot of power. Great choice for a reaction.

You guys need to play the long version. It's over 7 minutes long with extended drums from Olodum.
This is the 4 minute chopped version. It's good but the 7 minute version is absolutely legendary.
