The story behind this video is so legendary and shows how loved and influential Michael Jackson was. You probably researched some of this already, but I’ll try to explain the full story…

Michael Jackson wanted to film parts of the video in the Santa Marta favela in Rio de Janeiro, an area considered so dangerous that even local police were hesitant to enter. The Brazilian authorities initially tried to ban the filming because they feared that showing poverty and violence would damage Brazil’s image and hurt tourism.

Since the government unable to guarantee safety and the police refusing to secure the area, the production team, including Brazilian filmmaker Katia Lund, had to negotiate directly with Marcinho VP, the powerful local drug kingpin, who controlled the favela. It turned out that Marcinho VP was a huge Michael Jackson fan and he was so excited as soon as he heard Michael Jackson name. He not only granted permission for the filming but he also personally guaranteed complete safety for Michael and the entire cast and crew. He also reportedly said that, “As long as Michael Jackson is in town, this is the safest place on earth, You could leave a million dollars and all the film equipment in the streets — no one will touch it”

The filming went perfectly, with Marcinho VP's gang providing security, and the residents joyfully participating in the video, The video ended up bringing global attention to the community’s culture, struggles, and resilience.

It’s unbelievable how Michael’s music and his message reached every corner of the world. He had fans everywhere — beyond language, beyond culture, beyond race.

The leader of the Favela was a huge Michael Jackson fan. He told Michael that he and his crew could leave their equipment out in the open and nobody will touch it.

By the way, the scenes where people start running toward Michael and hugging him weren’t planned or scripted at all 4:09 .. That was completely real. When MJ arrived in Brazil, people in the streets went crazy, they rushed him out of pure love and genuine excitement. Spike Lee, the director just kept the cameras rolling and used the real footage in the video.

It shows how insanely loved Michael was there. The crowd’s reaction wasn’t acting, that was real emotion, real people, and real chaos caused by his presence.

When MJ went to Brazil, the police told him he couldn't go into the favelas; however, the favela leaders called MJ and told him that they would look after him. Consequently, he used real people from the favela, the police were real, and everything was improvised.
