I Played Diablo 2 Again for the First Time... 23 Years Later

I returned to Diablo 2 after 23 years. The last time I played Diablo 2 was back in 2003, when I played almost exclusively with a group of friends. They were already experienced, told me what skills to use, rushed me through the game, and eventually sent me straight into the Hell Cow farming machine. So when I came back to Diablo 2 Resurrected in 2026, I expected a massive nostalgia trip. Instead, I felt like I was playing Diablo 2 for the first time. Playing solo, without a build guide, has completely changed my experience. I'm discovering the game's atmosphere, music, story, bosses, grinding, randomized maps, gear progression, skill choices, and difficulty in a way I never did 23 years ago. And holy shit… Diablo 2 doesn't hold your hand. I've already made questionable decisions with my Barbarian, died and had to make the walk of shame back to my corpse, cheesed Duriel with a ridiculous number of town portals, burned through multiple respecs, and now I'm trying to figure out whether I can turn my Barbarian into a viable Whirlwind build without completely bricking the character. I'm currently progressing through Nightmare and discovering why Diablo 2's loot and progression loop is still so addictive. The RNG. The grinding. The tiny dopamine hits when an item finally drops. Even repeatedly resetting a shop has somehow become fun. After playing ARPGs like Diablo 4, Path of Exile 2, Grim Dawn, and No Rest for the Wicked, coming back to Diablo 2 Resurrected has given me a completely different perspective on what makes an ARPG rewarding. This isn't a guide or a meta build. This is what happened when a player who hadn't seriously played Diablo 2 in 23 years came back and tried to figure it out on his own.
