  Also important is the wood you burned as the water content determines the amount of smoke. Obvs all wood for burning would be stored to enable evaporation but the species would be selected as each one had its primary uses. Ash is particularly good for burning. It has so little moisture content you can burn it unseasoned

  I&apos;m older and am quite familiar with long houses. However, to answer your question about the most surprising thing for me was...<br>I live in the SW desert region of the USA. Livestock were not kept inside the ruins of stone structures. Living with the livestock inside makes sense for the culture and environment, though seemed alien to me. And I was a farm kid, so livestock was not weird for me.<br><br>I love your channel, I once told my friends your &quot;Like Townsends, except for medieval.&quot; I appreciate the way you tell both pros and cons.

  I might add in an additional step in this house development. That of the mezzanine or interior balcony once the smoke had been redirected by a central or gable-end chimney. &nbsp;These mezzanines were the bed rooms allowing the ground floor to remain as the working heart of the house and allowing a greater food preparation and cooking area.

  An interesting fact is that most Native American communities did not live with animals in their dwellings and the lack of animal domestication may have caused us not to have developed immunity to zoonotic diseases. My ancestors survived the diseases of European contact and I am happy to share my dwelling with dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, and goats if it will help with the next pandemic. I draw the line at living with turkey, duck, bison, skunks, possums, groundHOGS, and deer.
