This video is actually pretty deep. George Michael was breaking away from the image that made him famous after the Faith album and pushing back against the pressure from his record label to keep being the same pop star. That's why he doesn't appear in the video—instead, his iconic leather jacket, guitar, and other Faith symbols are destroyed to represent leaving that persona behind. The supermodels (Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, and Tatjana Patitz) were the biggest in the world at the time, and using them instead of himself was a statement. It wasn't officially a coming-out song, but looking back, it was definitely part of George Michael reclaiming his identity and artistic freedom.

George Michael was contractually obligated to make a music video for Sony, but it didn't specify that he had to appear in it. He asked the biggest supermodels of the time to appear in the video to show that the music industry only cared about beauty and image, rather than artistry and content.

These were the original supermodels of the 90s - beauty  in the most natural way. No botox, plastic, fillers, or surgery. The imagery presented in this video is creativity at it's best - you can stop this video at any time, print that still, and hang it on your wall.

The SUPER MODEL era in full force.  These women were huge during the 90's.    WHAM had a song on their first album called, "Freedom", that is why this one was given the 90 but not the same song.  This song was a middle finger to the record industry trying to control him.  He wasn't having it.  He wanted to be known as a writer, not a sex symbol and the record company wanted him to promote himself in that way.  He deliberately removed himself from this video and it still crushed it on the charts.   You will see images of his coat on fire and the jukebox blowing up.  Those were iconic in his Faith video, the same video that showcased his ass and made him a sex symbol.   Great song!

The jukebox represented his “Faith” music video.

George Michael saw the famous Vogue cover of Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell and Tatiana Patitz and decided he wanted the five of them to feature in the video. They were the most famous models of their day: The Supermodels.

Because as people have commented these 5 women were the most highly paid models of their era aka the supermodels of 1990´s. Though when he is singing about being little girls pride and joy i think he is referring to his wham days and not to him being in school.

I saw an interview with GM and he said “ media always want to know about my personal life, they only have to listen to my lyrics!”

The highly stylistic director David Fincher directed the video.

He was a great artist. His cover of "Sombody to love" from Queen is amazing.
