Grand Wizard Theodore invents the scratch at thirteen years old by accident while trying not to get in trouble with his mother. Grandmaster Flash's turntables are preserved in the Smithsonian Institution alongside Abraham Lincoln's hat. Mister Cee records a teenager rapping on a Brooklyn street corner and passes the tape to The Source — that teenager becomes Biggie. Jam Master Jay is shot in his studio in 2002 and the case takes twenty years. Afrika Bambaataa is a Bronx gang leader who puts down a weapon and picks up a crate of records. And Kool Herc throws a party on August 11, 1973 for twenty-five cents admission — and generates the entire history of hip-hop from one turntable technique. Twelve DJs.
